Oh, they understand the Second Amendment only tooooooo well. Without the Second Amendment, all the other Amendments, along with the Constitution, become meaningless.

Also, I'd bet that there's some Really Big Money to be made by government in such a scheme. And we all know how fond government is of picking the pockets of the citizenry. A $65 'registration fee' for each handgun would add up pretty quick.
