Are you seriously implying that schools don't need good funding to give good educations? Instead of trying to explain to you that education statistics prove that you are wrong, I'm going to try to appeal to your common sense. When a school doesn't get good funding they can't afford enough books, computers, allowances for teachers to spend on materials to help their students function in their class, and countless other things that are essential to a good education. It also means they can't afford to pay teachers as much as well as not being able to hire as many, so you have teachers working for less money, teaching MORE students. They are too overwhelmed with the amount of students they have to actually give 1 on 1 time to students that need it. Furthermore, public schooling being in the situation it is in causes people that would be great teachers to pick other, more profitable and more steady professions, because being a teacher is becoming less desirable by the day.

The accumulation of these and other problems are the reason why U.S education is going to shit. You can deny and deny and deny all you want, but the numbers speak for themselves. The right wing's neglect towards education and higher learning is completely responsible for this, and your ideology is going to drag it down even more.

Gee, how do they get by?

So if it's not money, because obviously they get enough to pay the best and brightest teachers in the country. Then why are kids learning less, why are schools turning out legally illiterate students?

In a nut shell, it's broken families, a direct result of liberalism!

Totally.  Teachers make plenty.  Libs just have no idea what they're talking about and care less about fiscal sanity.

Superintendent pay.... just wow.

http://www.foxbusiness.com/government/2013/03/19/superintendent-pay-at-top-class/

QuoteHowever, it's becoming increasingly typical for school superintendents to get super pay packages larded with retention or 'longevity' bonuses, lucrative health care, annuities, and retiree benefits that pay up to 80% of salary. They can also win additional perks like money for their child's college education, doctorate degrees, cars, parking garages, cell phones, travel, membership fees, even for unused vacation days.

I was one of the lucky ones.  I went to one of the last American districts to be federalized.  I literally spent grade school in a one-room schoolhouse, without indoor plumbing.  The teacher (note the singular tense) gave us something called BOOKS, left us the hell alone 90% of the time, and politely - but firmly - beat us if we didn't study.

I was doing trigonometry and reading over 1600 words per minute in the third grade.  By eighth grade, I had finished calculus and was reading at a post-graduate level.  Then I went to a federalized high school, sat through remedial classes, and basically wasted four years being babysat.  My entire actual education probably cost less than one month at the government warehouse.

BINGO!
Today's cattle farms don't strive to raise the bar, rather cater to the lowest common denominator, in turn, forcing the best and brightest to slowdown for the stupid.
I believe the removal of competition, instead giving awards for participation, is another tool of the left that has damaged the latest products of the national school system.

I'm a product of the Ca school system and packed rooms, I learned, but most of my knowledge comes from my parents and self study.

Same here.  I can honestly say I have never learned a single thing from school.  Nothing.  I taught myself math, etc., and my mother taught me how to read and write when I was little.  Schools should be in the hands of a community -- not the government.  Their only purpose in life is to make sure people are dumb.  Liberalism can't exist if people are educated.

It's not just primary education (which could once be called "grammar schools" with a straight face!)  I firmly believe that so-called "higher education" is geared to the morbidly obese portion of the bell curve as well.

I can't for the life of me imagine why the bizarre and archaic ritual of the lecture still exists at all -- let alone why schools constantly brag about increasing their teacher-to-student ratio.  The smartest person in the world can sit through a lecture at the exact same speed as a dullard.  And anyone whose brain works faster than the average mouth is actually at a DISadvantage when the "professor" is trying to hide hints about what's going to be on the test within his droning and disjointed monologues.

This all made perfect sense hundreds of years ago, when books costs more than paying someone to stand up and read to a crowd - and colleges were places children of privilege attended more to rub elbows with each other and distinguish themselves from the hoi polloi than to learn marketable skills.  But American schools today are spending trillions of dollars a year reverting to an elitist system that was obsolete before the musket was.

I was functionally illiterate(I couldn't read till I entered third grade). My old school teacher broke the rules and taught me phonetics, I was reading at 14 year old level by 4th grade, and never read the School prescribed children's books. My first reads were "Paradise Lost"," the Naked Communist"," Evangeline", "None Dare Call It Treason", "Jungle Books", "God Is My Co-Pilot", "The Blue Book", "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo", the "King James version of the Bible", "Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle", "The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam", the "Book of Common Prayer"; well, you get the idea, I wasn't following the "Frankfort School-Dewey" prescribed brain washing curriculum. I was a writer of adventure stories in 4th grade and my freshly mind conditioned recent Education School graduate teacher took me out on the stoop and lectured me several times to wean me from my obvious no longer politically acceptable story lines of rugged individualism, she asserted quite rigorously that we were no longer to think in those terms, that we had evolved to the progressive belief in collectivism. I continued in my regressive ways through my journey toward eventual release from the gulag of the State Coercive, Kaiser approved School System. 30 years ago while I was still a subject of the Marxist Republic of Aztlan, the general salary of Los Angeles public school mind controllers was north of 80,000 dollars, but my childrens' teachers refused to teach them how to read or write, one told me it wasn't too important, she couldn't spell either. The American people are not stupid, they are purposely ignorant of every needful branch of true knowledge; thanks to the Marxist/Fascist Education Union occupied State Coercive School System and their co-conspirators in the Demapublican Party and the communazi Prostitute Media.
