I click on the highlight and not the link. That takes me to unread posts for a particular thread.

This.  Plus, SMF does have a Bookmarks mod (hooks only) that allows allows the user to click a "heart" icon to mark a topic as a favorite and also find all his saved bookmarks in his profile.  The mod I wrote only let you return to the last post you were reading that you decided to reply to, after you replied, so that you could continue through the thread.

No. It is the top left icon says "new". On my laptop it is yellow.

This is pretty sweet... I was checking the forum performance, and it looks like the upgrade made a big difference.

The bigger the bar, the slower the forum (bad).  The shorter the bar, the faster the times (good).  Load times are now averaging under 1 second.  The rule of thumb is you want to be under 2 seconds.
