Trump was signing-autographs and cross-talking with other reporters who were cross-talking with Trump's entourage... when the reporter-engaging-Trump amateurishly changed the subject from Building A Wall to someone's obscure opinion about a muslim-database.

Neither the reporter, Trump, the other reporters, or Trump's entourage expressed any kind of physical astonishment when Trump quipped:  " Yeah, we should have one. "  (my paraphrase)

It seems to me that we should have a refugee database--not just for Muslims--but for all refugees.  I don't see anything wrong with that.  In fact, it should be a must. 
I've heard that 40% of the people who are here illegally have overstayed their visa.  I am shocked that there is no database on persons entering the country.  There certainly should be.

There are databases for visas and refugees, but the problem is they're not updated.

Someone comes in on a tourist visa, it gets logged.  Then they go do whatever and the government loses track of them.  Sure, you can tell they came in or left the country (assuming they used their own passport), but that doesn't tell you much.

I don't know how you do those updates without some sort of surveillance state.

Also, when Carson was asked, said there should be a database for everyone.  Trump's gaffe was a few days ago, he had a chance to think about an answer...

CNBC lost what tiny credibility they had during the debates, lost any possibility of hosting another, NBC was put on notice as well, so I wonder what can be done when a network is caught outright lying.

Newsflash there is a database for ALL immigrants and visitors on Visa, problem is it was not properly constructed to begin with and it is improperly maintained. If some one comes in on a VISA they are entered into the big computer in the sky, when they LEAVE they re not checked off. If and when they return into the US they are listed again.

There is no mechanism to track or follow up on overstays, one of the biggest sources of illegals.

I remember testimony by immigration employees during the 911 hearings, what a mess our visa programs are.  Many of the embassies were still using paper files and they were stacked up to the ceilings. 

One scenario was student visas.  The person would bring in several acceptance letters from different colleges and be issued a student visa.  Problem was, once they arrived, the embassies didn't have anyway to follow up to see if they even showed up at the college, or if they passed their acceptance letters and paperwork on to someone else to use.

Mrs Billy had been in an out of the US and UK during her college years, she said that in those times (early 80's) US immigration was fairly strict, often quizzing her upon entry and exit, there was also an immigration "liaison' person at her schools to take care of any problems with any student visa's or paperwork and kept them up to date. It seems to me that everyone got along just fine with "paper files" However during the 90's is when things went to hell, I thik the early 90's is when the started the computerized base.

Mrs Billy is checked when she comes into the country nowadays but no one....not even the airlines (as required by law) bother to report her frequent departures

Every other country in the world manages to track people who are in their country without citizenship.  Are we so backward that we cannot keep up with third world technology?????

It's not just a matter of technology. It's also a matter of tracking non-citizens without interfering with the free travel and/or enterprise of citizens. With our diverse population, it is simply not possible to accurately track ANY specific portion of the general population without stepping on the toes of our freedoms. Unfortunately, that makes us vulnerable to those who desire to disappear into our society. But then, that simply goes to the basic truth that liberty and security hold an inverse relationship. We cannot increase one without decreasing the other.

And we all know what Ben Franklin had to say about trading liberty for security.
