Like father, like son?

Maybe some of you can recall that when Princess Margaret's plane carrying her and Pierre Elliott Trudeau touched down, decades ago, it was searched and pot was found on board. Charges of course were never taken seriously. Royalty and VIP friends like the prime minister help a lady out that way....

Justin Trudeau, the son and also now Canadian prime minister, has just come out wanting to legalize a massive industry already employing untold thousands of Canadians.

QuoteOttawa (AFP) - Justin Trudeau raised eyebrows when he admitted to having dabbled in marijuana while a member of parliament, but his pledge as prime minister to legalize pot has been broadly cheered.

He said in a policy speech on Friday that his Liberal government would introduce legislation as early as 2016 to legalize marijuana, making Canada the first in the G7 bloc of industrialized nations to do so, although precise details remain sketchy.

Two in three Canadians support decriminalizing possession and use of the mind-altering weed, according to a recent Ipsos poll.

Support is widespread and at its highest level in three decades, it said, even though cannabis use has fallen off.

Details of the Liberal plan haven't yet been released. However, it is expected to go much further by not only legalizing marijuana but also creating a regulated market for it, as Uruguay and a few US states have done.

An estimated one million out of Canada's 35 million people regularly smoke marijuana, according to the latest survey taken in 2014.

I can only imagine what the tax rate will be. The tax rates here in Colorado are insane.

QuoteColorado collects tax revenue from marijuana sales through a 15 percent excise based tax on the average wholesale market rate; a 10 percent state tax on retail marijuana sales; a state sales tax of 2.9 percent; varied local sales taxes; and local marijuana taxes such as a 3.5 percent tax in Denver.

Washington rate from the same article.

QuoteWashington State collects tax revenue from marijuana sales through a 25 percent tax on producer sales to processors; a 25 percent tax on processor sales to retailers; a 25 percent tax on retailer sales to customers; a state Business & Occupation (B&O) gross receipts tax; a state sales tax of 6.5 percent; and varied local sales taxes. The total effective tax rate to be about 44 percent.

It's a safe bet that the Trud'uh plan will backfire spectacularly, spitting the gears and spring-mechanisms of its unforeseen consequences wildly skyward.

I just have memories of Justin Trudeau's mother running off on a wild fling with the Rolling Stones band.  She was also doing a lot of drugs as I remember.

I think it ended her marriage but I don't know what became of her.

I would hope we could attract some Canadians here to get their perspective on issues.

If they're too stoned to get off the couch, they are not likely to get in the way of those doing any actual defending of their nation. Oh, wait. Canadian self-defense forces. We pause now for you to savor that "Mouse That Roared" concept....

I grew up in Michigan, listening to and watching Canadian media outlets. There was a time (accurately) when their military was a preposterous farce. Canadians rely on us for defense. Therefore, let them sit it out (wasted or not, doesn't matter) and let us do our thing (with nukes or not) and everyone will supposedly be happy...once Hussein is deposed and adults come in to handle youngsters like this lad.

Marijuana production in Canada is up in the millions of OUR dollars range, if not more than $1 billion. Trudeau can see tax dollars from it, and it's not likely he can stop marijuana production since the grow-houses are now stereotypical throughout British Columbia, known for "B.C. Bud." Premier TV series up there like DaVinci's Inquest were talking about this in detail, decades ago. It's not a new issue and it will never go away.

I dare say their comments about the Obama administration blocking a certain pipeline project just MIGHT get a touch incendiary. They're entitled to be furious. We can't stand the fool, either.
