Making the case for Socialism

The Democratic Socialist of America, of which AOC and Sanders are proud members, has openly stated its goal is the end of capitalism.

So sanders is running on a platform to rid america of all private insurance companies, in favor of a single gov't run health program. Presumably, he would argue, that gov't is not in it for profit, and the consumer will be better off - better off would mean lower cost, more choice, better care, better outcomes...

So gov't wants to take over 18% of the us economy on the basis that it will do a better job for us citizens than private companies.

If that is the case, it would logically follow that gov't would do a better job at running the auto industry, and all energy, and, well any industry for that matter....So why not just comes out and say gov't should nationalize all private companies?

Or is the argument that gov't will do a much better job with healthcare, and taking it all from private companies....but that's where it ends...There is something unique about healthcare, that gov't will do a better job than private entities....Are we to believe that?

Because in the back of my head, I keep hearing that lomg term goal about ending all capitalism.

"The DSA regards the abolition of capitalism and the realization of socialism as a gradual long-term goal, therefore the organization focuses its immediate political energies on reforms within capitalism that empower working people while decreasing the power of corporations:[121][122][123][124]

As we are unlikely to see an immediate end to capitalism tomorrow, DSA fights for reforms today that will weaken the power of corporations and increase the power of working people."

All I will say is that we see how well socialism has worked.

I've never believed people really want socialism...

QuoteIf I asked you if you'd like a bite of a dish that had sugar, some strawberries, and some ice cream, you might accept.  If I asked if you'd like a bite of a turd covered in those condiments, you'd likely decline.  The propaganda systems like to tell you about a dish covered in all the good stuff while leaving out the main ingredient.

I had a prolonged conversation with a socialist on twitter once. It ended when I started asking him what he would do if I just moved into his house because I liked the location. He said I couldn't do that. I said, why not, everything is community property. He left after that.

He also thought he didn't need locks on the door because there would be no theft.

The fundamental notion of socialism - gov't ownership over the means of production - violates every principle on which this country was founded...the gov't under the people...socialism puts the gov't on top of the people...

sadly, advocates of socialism have this idea that gov't will be this great referee equalizer - and if every gov't gov't simply becomes the abuser...ussr, cuba etc.

It violates so many other principles. People need motivation to produce. Some people will find that motivation through intrinsic means. But most of us need money. Without a need for money and no money provided by the employer, I'm just going to play golf every day. Why not? It's free!
