A political mistake, yes. But his fundamental view, the impulse that led him to seek immigration "reform" remains intact.

I understand why he wanted to do it, as deporting 11 million people is very impractical. However, yes, politically he made a huge mistake as the base of the Republican Party will never forgive him for it

Both taxes and I just handled the "impracticality" argument as well.

Don't have to. Romney was right (about this, at least). Enforce the law, and they will self-deport. Only actively deport those that come into contact with law enforcement. Otherwise, no government assistance, no driving privileges, no work authorization and enforce e-verify with prohibitive consequences for employers who violate. The problem will solve itself within a few years.

Do most of you here believe that self deportation will work? I have to admit I never really thought about it much. I just figured it was impractical to take 11 million people out.

I do.  I've seen it first hand.  I owned an industrial staffing company that serviced the food industry.  When jobs leave, so do they.  I was also a real estate investor from 2005 to around 2012.  In those industries, I became very familiar with the ebbs and flows of immigration.

When the jobs dry up, they go back.

...and yes, there are logistical challenges to "rounding them up and putting them on buses".  All we can do is deport them as we catch them, enforce labor laws, and not provide welfare and subsidies to them.  They come here for opportunity.  When that opportunity dries up, they go back.

Obviously that query isn't directed at me because I answered that already, but to be fair, you have to restate it:

If there is the political will to properly implement the necessary laws and enforcement mechanisms, would a self-deportation plan work, in conjunction with other methods (real border enforcement, tracking down amnesty claimants that miss court, better enforcement on visa overstays, etc.)?

I just listened to Ted Cruz' explanation of the events on the Hannity show...and I'm satisfied with his explanation.

Like Taxed, I also saw it worked. I used to work the Hilton Head area (Somebody had to do it). There were many Hispanics working there in construction and landscaping. When the 2008 crash occurred many left. I worked with some folks who catered to that market to the extent of having bi-lingual staff. They had to evolve away from that market as the jobs dried up and the folks left.
