Quote from: Billy's bayonet on February 02, 2023, 10:10:52 AMJust a few things since we are getting into my area of expertise as a former defensive tactics instructor for my Dept. One of things that we began to teach UNIFORMLY across the country was that you AVOID punching during an altercation. The reason for this is because depts across the country were transitioning from revolvers to semi automatics, which required a more articulate hand, punching a suspect especially in the head or face/jaw can injure your hand making using your service weapon difficult should it escalate to that. I was a great proponent of Judo/wrestling style takedowns with the joint locking techniques of Aikido/ jujitsu then immediate cuffing searching then get him into a transport and the hell out of there before a crowd shows up and starts shit.

But in the late 90s the IACP (international Chiefs of Police) came up with the use of force continuum you can look it up on line that is what officers across the country are taught and has been FORCE POLICY for just about every Police dept as a model since the 90s.

I dont agree with some of it as one goes to verbal commands to use of a defensive weapon such as pepper spray (you get as much on you as on the suspect) or the collapsible baton (ASP) which will really injury a suspect with a tendency to break bones/bone chips. Grappling, wrestling Judo throws takedowns are discouraged. AS IS PUNCHING KICKING KNEEING THROWING ELBOWS ETC ETC. In some juridiction the VERY effective choke hold is Forbidden. The problem with This policy demands you keep whacking the suspect, usually in the thighs until he complies, gets on the ground face down and voluntarily puts his hands behind his back to comply.

If you watch the Rodney king Video this is exactly what the cops we doing and this is exactly the problem it creates, the cops spend too much time pepper spraying and beating him with the baton. Somebody should have grabbed his arm twisted it behind his back, cuffed him then ended it & got him into a transport.

I can see some elements of this policy in this recent video. Tyree is not complying, rolls around gets to his feet and dances around, taking hits. Cops are pepper spraying themselves, hitting him with the ASP punching him kicking him yet no one grabs him in a headlock holds him down while somebody else cuffs him. Five big bozos and they never get control of Tyre because they dont know how to effectively grapple or use submission holds, They are too busy whipping his ass.

I was against such policy or thought it should be modified incorporate the aforementioned techniques but the boneheaded upper management would have none of it. I can understand their point in a way because we were hiring 100 lb Police Women who aren't going to be that effective at grappling.

Forgive my rambling on but this issue hits home with me and I think a lot of unnecessary injuries to suspects even deaths are the result of a poor policy

Excellent points Billy!
Brings back memories, and also made connection I never recognized before, that people never saw policing in a negative light until these policies were instituted.
Granted, the Marxists exploited it, and forcing female hires in a mans profession has always been fuckin stupid.

But outlining "use of force" was probably one of the dumbest moves ever. It forced small town cops into applying big leftist city policy on towns that never had problems in the first place.
