Before it was rescinded two hours after being proposed, somebody showed they inability to gasp reality. You impose a 20% tax on imported goods, the consumer pays the tax not the manufacturer or country of origin.

However, I think what Trump has in mind, is you have an American product and next to it you have the same product only for 20% more. The result: loss of sales to whoever gets the 20% tax imposed on them.

Also see-spot-run economics.

Yeah, Ford would just pass it along to the end purchaser.

For your example to work the items produced in Mexico would have to priced at or very near to a similar item produced in the states. That's not likely with the disparity in labor rates. The example I heard of put out over the radio was a salsa produced in Mexico and originally costing $2.00. With a 20% tax it is then priced at $2.40. The similar salsa produced in the states would cost $4.00. The consumer buying the less expensive salsa pays for the wall.

How about a 20% tax on money being sent home.   Now that's one hell a lot of money.

Billy's Bayonet and walkstall, that would produce a lot of money but I think a cottage industry would quickly spring up generating new and less traceable methods of transferring money.

IF so take all the moneys from the cottage industry.  If there is a will there is a way.  20% of it or all of it when the find it.

Really ?

Now, a 20% tax on CHINESE goods would hurt me.

A 500% tax on Mexican - meh.

There is not one item in a hundred that I buy that is made there.

And those I could easily do without.

F MEXICO.

Which is one way to look at it.

Another way, using your example, is that Mexico pays for the wall by losing that salsa sale. Fifty of your example sales is $100 out of Mexico's pocket and $100 in US pockets.

If your claim is totally true, riddle me this: why would the threat of higher import fees by Trump be one of the reasons companies are staying in the country? After all, they can just pass the fee along to the consumer.

Another thought aalong these lines: nobody's forcing the American consumer to buy the $2.40 salsa, he always has the option of buying the $2.00 salsa. So the consumer always has the choice of whether he wants to pay the fee or not.

The second thing: when I buy a product, such as salsa in the example, I look for the most bang for my buck. So, unless I want really authentic salsa, I'd probably pass on the $2.40 salsa, avoidimh the fee. I'm willing to bet most consumers would do likewise.

"Cottage industry" sounds to me like smuggling or perhaps money laundering, and if more than $10,000 failure to report that transfer which comes under RICO money laundering statures.

...then you can seize 100% of it.
