MADRID/LISBON, April 28 (Reuters) - A huge power outage brought parts of Spain and Portugal to a standstill on Monday, grounding planes, halting public transport, causing panic buying and leaving the two countries scrambling to restore power to millions of homes and businesses.
Some hospitals halted routine work, some shops shut their doors and the two countries' governments convened emergency cabinet meetings as officials tried to find out what caused the mass blackout from around 1033 GMT. Outages on such a scale are extremely rare in Europe.

I know we have brown outs but this seems like something else.  Did someone pull the plug/flipped a switch?  How much chaos would ensue?  Toy

It will be interesting to see what is reported as being the cause.

Here is one explanation being reported.

Blackouts caused by 'rare atmospheric phenomenon'
Power cuts caused by a "rare atmospheric phenomenon" have impacted as many as 50 million people across Spain and Portugal - causing huge disruption to public transport, airports and vital telecommunications networks.

Mmmm Yes must be global heating, er cooling. Yea that's what did it.

Saw the cyber attack reason earlier.

Don't rule out terrorism. Power grid is extremely vulnerable in Countries around the world. And it should come as no surprise, the Power grid in the USA. A coordinated Terrorist attack across the country aimed at power transfer stations could shut down our Entire Country. There is little or NO Security for these power stations and transfers. We live in the age of drones which any idiot can use and it doesn't take much to fit these things with explosives. I have long thought that DHS should be tasked with protection programs.

Brown outs were common in many third world crap holes I was in. The primary reason is people hijacking electricity, happens alot.

I am at a loss as to why Spain and Portugal would be attacked. I do not believe they are active partsapating in any of the wars. And are keeping a low profile on the world stage. If power grid was actively being attacked, I don't think it could be silenced.

Are we seeing a "Test Run"?
What I find interesting is, they claimed cell service was out, despite redundancies and battery backup systems.

For those keeping score at home:

April 22nd: Spain brags about hitting 100% renewable power.

April 28th: Spain has the nation's largest blackout in history.

Might have something to do with the blackout or not.

Some years ago they had problems in Spain with the Basques. The Basques wanted a separate state or perhaps an autonomous zone. There was a terrorist organization of Basques called ETA, they did a bunch of typical terrorists stuff, bombings a few kidnappings etc etc I don't think they have been active for years, but who knows.

It would be well deserved, if it were the reason.

Apparently they will need to do a "black start" to recover. here is an article that describes the process and challenges:

What your describing sounds like a Carrington event or and EMP.  Had not heard of the cell phone, nor or any fires.

As of this writing have not seen any explanation ether.

Am having internet issues this morning, South East Arizona.

Just came across this interesting article:

Still looking at green energy as the cause.
QuoteHowever, others have theorized the blackout was caused by an overdependence on 'green energy.'

"Six days ago, the media celebrated a significant milestone: Spain's national grid operated entirely on renewable energy for the first time during a weekday. At 12:35 pm today local time, the lights went out across Spain and Portugal, and parts of France. Although power was quickly restored in France, it could take a week to fully restore power in Spain and Portugal," journalist Michael Shellenberger commented.

QuoteThis is truly bananas: all of Europe appears to have been seconds away a continent-wide blackout.

The grid frequency across continental Europe plunged to 49.85 hertz — just a hair above the red-line collapse threshold.

The normal operating frequency for Europe's power grid is 50.00 Hz, kept with an extremely tight margin of ±0.1 Hz. Anything outside ±0.2 Hz triggers major emergency actions.

If the frequency had fallen just another 0.3 Hz — below 49.5 Hz — Europe could have suffered a system-wide cascading blackout.

At that threshold, automatic protective relays disconnect major power plants, and collapse accelerates.

And it's disturbingly easy to imagine multiple scenarios where that could have occurred...

As the reason points more towards green energy, or rather the lack of it's consistency, I'm guessing the truth getting out is moving further away. Bad things happen when power surges, either up or down, coming in or going out.

Hz is 60 for my region, I assume because of transfers of power, it is the same for all of North America. Since it is higher, I really really hope the head monkeys here are paying attention.
