Let me start by asking for forgiveness for generalizations, try to see this for what it is not so much on a personal level. There seems to be a difference in conclusions that liberals and conservatives reach from the same arguments... in the gun control debate, liberals argue for sacrificing a little bit of freedom (banning some weapons, etc) for more security and safety which conservatives argue against... in the national security debate, it is the conservatives that argue for losing some freedoms (ex: increased wiretaps or limiting rights of terror suspects) to increase security which those that are more liberal argue against just as vehemently... not sure why then that, say conservatives can't make the same argument of giving up some freedom for safety for guns or why liberals can't see it as the same freedoms they're protecting in the national security debate.



I am very interested to read the responses to my question. This is the type of thread where deep thought out responses are required, try to separate your emotions from this one and attempt to give your explanation for this.

I for one believe both the patriot act and any further restrictions on the second amendment are disgusting. However that really isn't relevant to the question. I will say one of my favorite quotes is:

A conservative, (should), make their arguments based on the constitutional limitations on government; always.

Liberals only refer to the constitution when it's convenient to the particular cause of the day.

Those who support the PATRIOT Act are not conservatives, they are neo-statists.

Gun control doesn't work. It has nothing to do with safety, security or sanity....it has everything to do with some feel good measure that creates an illusion in the untutored mind.

Why invest any effort into something that doesn't work?

The Patriot act in the wrong hands   can be a weapon wielded against the American people rather than the foreign enemy it was intended to thwart.
