Quote from: patentlymn on July 07, 2025, 09:34:12 AMVery interesting. I watch video blogs including some from former USSR. A couple statements surprised me. Some older people said that food was much worse now than during USSR.

In order for that to be true the food must have changed AND changed suddenly. Likely around 1990.  I am not glorying the 'workers paradise" but wonder if changes like the above changes to McDonalds' fries happened in a short time in the USSR.  One video blogger described ladies peeling potatoes for the school lunch in Kiev UsSR. I wonder how many decades ago in US school lunches did something like that.
I remember going to Mc D's in the 60s and watching the kid sitting on a bucket feeding potatoes into a hole in the wall, a big ass potato peeler/slicer, yes, they were fresh and fried.
Those days are over, as to school, I worked in the kitchen, the food was top quality, hand made mayo, bread everything was raw and the kitchen prepared it all. Now, it all come ready made and shipped in and mostly microwaved.

A lot has changed in 50 short years. Oh, and Russia had their own menu, not the same as the US, same as Japan, but you can still get the standard Big Mac.

Grok says there is more than this and said
Penalties for State-Funded Coverage of Undocumented Immigrants: States like California and New York, which use their own funds to cover undocumented immigrants, face a reduced federal match rate (from 90% to 80%) for their ACA expansion programs, cutting $76 billion in federal funds from 2028 to 2034. This pressures states to end such coverage or absorb higher costs.

Why should the feds match anything for illegals?

In 2025, Governor Gavin Newsom proposed scaling back Medi-Cal coverage for undocumented immigrants due to a $12 billion state budget deficit. Starting January 2026, new enrollment for undocumented adults (ages 19 and older) will be frozen, though current enrollees will retain coverage. Children can still enroll, and emergency/limited-scope Medi-Cal remains available. Additionally, a $30 monthly premium for undocumented adults and the elimination of dental care for noncitizens are set to begin in 2027 and July 2026, respectively. These changes aim to save over $5 billion.
...

The expansion of full-scope Medi-Cal to undocumented immigrants is funded almost entirely by state dollars, as federal matching funds are not available for noncitizens without qualified immigration status. The cost is estimated at $3.1 billion annually, with $12.4 billion budgeted for 2025-26 ($11.1 billion from the state, $1.3 billion from federal funds for emergency services).???

...

[i cut out many details]
As of January 1, 2024, California expanded full-scope Medi-Cal to all income-eligible undocumented immigrants, regardless of age, making it the first state to offer comprehensive health insurance to this population. Full-scope Medi-Cal includes standard outpatient dialysis (thrice-weekly hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or home dialysis) and related services like medications, specialist visits, and transportation.

...
Standard Outpatient Dialysis (Full-Scope Medi-Cal): Full-scope Medi-Cal covers standard dialysis at outpatient clinics, which is significantly less expensive. The cost per patient is estimated at $76,177 to $90,971 annually, depending on provider rates and additional services (e.g., medications, transportation).

Overall Medi-Cal Costs for Undocumented Immigrants: The California Department of Finance reported that the state is spending $9.5 billion annually (2024-2025 budget) on Medi-Cal for undocumented immigrants, with $8.4 billion from the state's general fund and $1.1 billion from federal funds for emergency services (including emergency dialysis).

...
Federal Penalties: The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (2025) reduces the federal Medicaid match rate for states like California that cover undocumented immigrants, cutting $76 billion in federal funds from 2028 to 2034. This increases state costs for dialysis and other services.

...
Organ transplants in the U.S. are managed by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), which operates the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) under federal oversight. UNOS allocates organs (from deceased donors) based on medical criteria, not citizenship or immigration status.
