Another Win: Farmer acquitted of producing milk without license

It is a sad fact of modern life that seemingly everything is both heavily regulated by the government and politicized. This applies to, yes, even cow's milk. Witness the case of Wisconsin farmer Vernon Hershberger, who was prosecuted for selling raw milk to willing consumers — in this case friends and neighbors:

Jurors found Vernon Hershberger, a 41-year-old Loganville, Wis., farmer, innocent of producing milk without a license, selling milk and cheese products without a license, and operating a retail establishment without a license. He was found guilty of one count of breaking a holding order issued by the state in June 2010, which barred him from moving any of the food he produced without a license.

The verdict means Mr. Hershberger can continue to sell his farm's products to members of the buying club he started, said one of his attorneys, Elizabeth Rich. He faces as long as a year in jail and $10,000 in fines for the one guilty count; a sentencing date has yet to be announced.

"This is a huge win for food rights," said Liz Reitzig, a founder of Farm Food Freedom Coalition, a group advocating for greater consumer access to natural, unprocessed food. The case "should give small farmers renewed courage to continue to operate within their communities."

Yeah, I remember seeing this in a documentary a few years ago. 'Raw' cow's milk is considered a 'health and safety problem'. It is an obvious law that is created to squeeze out small farms and give more power to the multi-billion dollar farming industry. Who a few top corporations control.

A big thumbs up for any ruling that allows people to tend to their life with less government interference.  Oh and I was able to get my hands on some raw milk and while I cannot drink regular milk because it tastes awful, when I took a sip of raw milk I found the taste to be incredible.

I am sure that if you count all the people around the world that drink milk without processing it, the number would dwarf the numbers that drink it processed.  Yet we are not able to get milk unprocessed.  I am OK with rules that require the seller to be honest about how processed or unprocessed their milk is but we should be able to choose to drink unprocessed milk if we want to.

There are a few farms near me that will sell it to you, but they don't advertise.  You have to know someone who knows lol!
I hope his sentence for the one count he was found guilty on does not hurt him, finally some good news!

I know of a families who buys it also along with butter milk and a few other things that turn my stomach. :scared: Didn't know it was illegal. You have to walk thru his chicken house and around a small lake to get to it.LOL

I have a friend in SC who buys and drinks raw milk and he told me the sale of the milk is legal in his state.  He says it tastes great, but I have never tasted it.  I guess I was brainwashed as a child about pasteurization to prevent TB.  But IMO if a farmer wants to sell it and a buyer wants to buy it knowing it has not been pasteurized, it is none of the government's business.

It isn't illegal here yet, but there have been a few raw milk raids just a few hours east of me in WI.  I can only assume they keep things quiet to avoid scrutiny in the future.

I really don't like raw milk but I think he has the right to sell it.  What will happen is someone will get sick and sue him.  He can't win either way.
The Golden Rule is the only rule we need.

That's the thing, it never was illegal, but Big Govt certainly tried to hang it on this poor guy anyway.

Gibson Guitars raided to keep the world safe from imported wooden frets and now a dairy farmer on the loose with raw milk....
I certainly hope that couple busted for raising imported orchids without a license don't go on a rampage.
