Winter blackouts could hit Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, regional grid operator warns

So much for GW....
Some people need to start picking up some good size generators for home use.

A repeat of last winter's deep freeze could lead to electricity blackouts in a clutch of states spanning the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic as proposed environmental regulations propel a switch toward natural gas-fired power.

PJM Interconnection, a regional grid operator, proposed new measures aimed at ensuring it doesn't again flirt with losing 22 percent of its electricity capacity as it did during the "polar vortex" in early January. Echoing the concerns of Republicans and some centrist Democrats who have admonished the Obama administration for rules that would restrain the use of coal-fired power, PJM noted the situation could become more dire under a "rapid transition" from coal to natural gas.

We already have propane backup as of last winter.  Shopping now for a generator because winters here seem especially cold when fronts come over the nearby mountains.  Hopefully we will get that extra needed help for times when our power might be interrupted.

Think about a propane generator if it's small that way you will not need a lot of gasoline around.   If your going big think about a diesel generator.

Propane might be better.  Gas and diesel might suffocate me if I got the slightest fumes from it.  Got half of my left lung gone.

Last winter was pretty cold out here in Oregon also... I know to many of you its something you deal with every winter but we had some pretty good freezes, snow and ice that hung on forever... We have some friends that live not far from us that were without power for close to two weeks.
We always expect at least one good ice storm and snow a few times, but for us, it is generally over within 24-48 hours and were back to just good ol rain...  We were prepared thankfully with plenty of wood for heat, had stocked up on animal feed and had the generator gassed up.. I have heard they are calling for a colder winter this year...  It seems summer has slipped by and Hubby and I were just saying we have a month of good weather left to get all our summer chores done...

I have a younger brother in Bend Oregon and I think your West of that.  We are up in Washington as you know.  We were hitting 15ยบ off and on last winter.  Ice on the trees from fog and snow on the ground off an on for a week at a time.  Winter time we shop for 3 months.  But go into town when the road down the hill is safe.  The good wife does not like the road when there snow on it.     It is a 500' drop down to State Rt. 14 from our place.   She love the snow but a stay at home type a gal when there snow.   Snow start around mid December and runs until mid March off and on.  The most our power has been out in the winter is 1 hr, in 5 years.  They had planed to have it out for 2 hrs but it only took the 1hr. to do the job.  They called us every Monday for 3 week to tell us it would be out on that day and what time.  There no trees around the power lines in our area of the world.    Good luck this year AMom.

I wouldn't take anything for our little patch of grass up here near the mountains of SC.  Virtually no traffic thru here, no ugly road signs, no business unless it is farm related.  The busiest time here is usually every Sat. and around all holidays as it is one of the scenic routes to the mountains that biker clubs frequent.  I counted over 200 bikers early one Sat.  You can actually see all the beauty of open country in its various stages during changing of the seasons.  Really quite lovely.  The temps here are close to the temps in nearby Columbus NC rather than nearby Sptbg., with a range of 6-7deg. lower.  Anyone gets snow, it is us in this area.  Wood stoves are quite normal here.  Most everyone in my area have propane tanks too.

Same here, completely self contained and sufficientlly supplied, that we could avoid all of humanity for two years if need be.
Which used to be, like you the occasional bike group meander through miles away. But what really used to be the thorn in our butt, was the tree huggers every Memorial and Labor day, like locusts from the Bay area, they'd infest the forest for about a week and leave it to us to clean up their mess.

But that all changed a few years when their dream of liberal policies came true, and they actually regulated themselves out of the forest.
No more vehicles, and horses are relegated to trail "ONLY", foot traffic has to avoid endangered specie plants, or face a hefty fine.
So what happened? They simply quit coming and now blame Govt for overreacting.

I love it when libs are forced too abide by the rules they placed on everyone else.

Yes, it is strange how the libs react to their own crap.

Your area is likely prettier than mine but colder too.  We are only seven miles away from a pretty stretch of mountains but the weather changes coming across the mountains are unpredictable.  Usually the weather reporters take the safe avenue of reporting and say something like snow likely north of the I-85.  Heck that could be anywhere but is usually our little area.  All part of why I like living here.  We will be taking a drive along Hwy. 25 towards these mountains and stop along the way to do some shopping for mountain art or home items like homemade afghans or quilts.  The "sheriff" and I may even stop at a private stream we know of and eat lunch and do a little fly-fishing.  Lots to see and do in my area.
