Cairo (AFP) - An Egyptian court sentenced deposed Islamist president Mohamed Morsi to death on Saturday for his role in a mass jailbreak during the 2011 uprising.


The judge issued the same sentence to more than 100 other defendants including Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badei, who had already been handed the death penalty in another trial, and his deputy Khairat al-Shater.

Morsi, who rose to the presidency in 2012 as the Brotherhood's compromise candidate after Shater was disqualified, ruled for only a year before mass protests prompted the military to overthrow him in July 2013.

He and dozens of other Islamist leaders were then detained during a crackdown that left hundreds of his supporters dead.

Many of those sentenced on Saturday were tried in absentia, including prominent Islamic cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi, who lives in Qatar.

It is becoming evident to me that the Egyptian government is getting its act together. They obviously see the threat from the Muslim Brotherhood and not afraid to destroy them. They and the Israelis have much in common as far as stability in the MS is concerned. That alliance may be the future of the ME once we rid ourselves of Obama and the US becomes an ally again.

He was Muslim Brotherhood, and we have these people here crawling all over the White House.

Not just the WH, Dori.   They have infested the entire democratic party...... Congress...... and government agencies.

Side note that the guy who has the final live or die say so is the Grand Mufti in Egypt.  That's actually not a bad idea, from one perspective, not that I would like to see us adopt it. This way, they are laying off the capital punishment decision on the religious authority, hopefully closer to God and off the conscience of human authorities.
No to go on and on, here, but I also read the rationale behind stoning is that no one really knows who cast the fatal stone. Kind of like having one blank in a firing squad.

That is true red_dirt...

Prior to the invention of firearms.... stoning was the most "just" alternative available.   Stoning preceded the guillotine, hangings, and crucifixions.
 
I always wondered how Cain slew Abel.  What was his weapon?   

..... probably a stone!

Then there was the little shepherd boy who honed his marksmanship on wolves and coyotes. He got so good with that slingshot, he could sink a stone right  between the eyes of the big guy.

Just saw a news-blip of the sentencing on CBS...  " Egypt's first democratically-elected President... was overthrown in a coup. "   That's it.  No mention of the MB's appalling behavior.  Another leftist nothing to see here news-moment after they've been proven wrong.  It was just an opportunity for CBS to inject the Egypt's first democratically-elected President line.  -More contrived cheerleading for hc and bo.

I don't know, D.  I had CBS on to watch golf.  -Then did the dishes and came back.  But it wouldn't surprise me if CBS treated the killer's sentencing lightly and distraction-laden.  Yet only 3 people have faced Federal death-sentences since 1988.
