Yet according to the left, this campaign season is the worst in history.
If one were to look back at every election where the left made such a proclamation, you would see a pattern, a pattern of loss, they always make the claim when when the opponent speaks the truth.

Billy can straighten out any historical details here, but I seem to recall how in New York during the Draft Riots, there were crooks in Tammany Hall who openly sold patronage jobs and dispensed raw brute power by controlling fire and police protection (including separate and politically conflicting police units). The Gangs of New York showed bribe-taking at all levels of city government, and how houses were allowed to burn if a fire brigade didn't share the property owner's political belief.

Hatred and bigotry ran rampant through America, with fierce debate over whether decent white men should have to go and die for a race that we had allowed to be brought here and now could not agree what to do next. In New York the Irish battled anyone who'd fight them. There were also tong wars in Chinatown, riots in Spanish Harlem and the real Harlem too.

Somehow it all stays together. It's the toughest town on Earth, just ask them after 9/11.

You are again correct sir, tammany hall was the most corrupt of regimes, Police were known as "Tammanay tigers" and noted for their savage corruption, everything trickled up, from the "swag" captured by beat cops from burglars, the precinct captain got his share and everything moved up...come voting time guess who turned out to vote three or four times.... Most of the cops were Irish of course, and New York was not the only place where such existsed, Boston, Philadelphia all had their equivilent.


Interesting to note, my department Washington DC Metropolitan police was not formed until 1860, and then to control the influx of federal troops who were converging on Washington DC at Mr Lincolns call. As you might guess they were mostly Irish, the first recorded arrest was of a drunken Irish prostitute.

but not much has changed, Corrupt pols still control the police dept, they did in my day.
