Despite a campaign by Democrats and the establishment media to delegitimize President Donald Trump after Wednesday's Capitol incursion, Department of Defense officials intend to avoid outside pressure and continue to recognize him as the commander in chief while avoiding taking part in "a military coup," according to a report.
It was widely reported Friday that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asked Army Gen. Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to limit the president's access to the country's so-called nuclear football, which contains launch codes for America's vast arsenal of nuclear weapons.
Pelosi called Milley to ask him to ignore orders from Trump to use those codes. It's unclear what initiated the call to Milley. No specific threat from Trump seems to exist, suggesting the call was made for political purposes.
The California Democrat reportedly told Milley she wants to limit the president from responding to international threats during the final days of his term.
NPR reported Pelosi told her Democratic colleagues she spoke to Milley about "available precautions for preventing an unstable president from initiating military hostilities or accessing the launch codes and ordering a nuclear strike."
"The situation of this unhinged President ... could not be more dangerous and we must do everything that we can to protect the American people from his unbalanced assault on our country and our democracy," Pelosi wrote.
But according to The New York Times, the Pentagon is remaining neutral in the partisan squabbling.
A statement from Col. Dave Butler, a spokesman for Milley, confirmed to The Times that the call took place.
"[Milley] answered her questions regarding the process of nuclear command authority," Butler said.

For what its worth in the Inaugurals past that I worked, it was not unusual to see national guard troops eve US Army troops doing security ad mundane tasks like putting up fences. I even remember one inaugural where either national Guard or US Army set up a GREAT MESS TENT....hot food steaming coffee and tea, hot chocolate, really great when you were working 12 14 hrs in the freezing cold.
But I can't help but wonder if all this is just a ruse..... :wink:

Honestly no, they moved to the DC armory in SE DC and staged from there, put up stuff during the day. The MPD, the Park Police ad the Capitol police were doing the bulk of security.

It's not all that necessary, the real work is going on behind the scenes, probably with the Federal Marshals service, this is just to keep things calm on the outside.

Because the National Guard is made up of citizen soldiers.
The the top officers of the active duty military are political hacks.
They have been for decades.
Just look at some of the betrayals by some of the military officers
Trump appointed to the White House staff!
Obama completed the "cleansing" of the military by purging several dozen generals and admirals.
All that are left are toadies, who constantly purge the military of all Americanism,
all the way down to Second Lieutenant, Airman Basic,
and whatever the E1s are called in the other services.
