I am well aware of the pitfalls and undesirability of a pure Democracy. I am also aware that our Founders wanted nothing to do with it.

I suppose I should have expanded on mob rule comment.  IMO, going to straight popular vote instead of using the method currently provided for in the COTUS, would be another step toward a pure democracy.  As a country we took a bad step in that direction with the passage of the 17th Amendment (IMO).
