I think it is a way to raise donations without all the little games that go with that once a candidate declares he is running. For years the democrats have called that signing a book deal.

It was a set up by Trump...worked like a charm....First he gets the left all worked up over his "Major announcement" days ahead of time. Guaranteed to give them many sleepless nights worrying what it might be. Then he reveals its Trump superhero trading cards and they breathe a sigh of relief and ridicule him over it.

Like a master magician once he has your attention diverted, he drops the other shoe:

There's no doubt that Trump will make money off of this. He's essentially selling something that has zero per unit cost for $100 each. The question is, how much of a reputational hit will he take as being a serious candidate for the presidency. I don't see Reagan or HW bush selling baseball cards to raise money.
