Well, they've got two years to convince the voters they did the right thing. We'll see how that turns out.

They also blocked the 350$ (round about number for property tax refund...they are raisning corp taxes all at the same time SS is giving tax payers a break by reducing their SS deduction by 2% to the worker but business still has to pay the 6.2%... How utterly fitting eh?
Alot of people are talking about moving out  of the state...alot of businesses will shut the door.... but it's ok,,,they didnt raise cig taxes.... ???

Just caught an item on Fox. Looks like Wisconsin is starting a campaign to get tax-weary Illinoisians and Illinois businesses to move to Wisconsin - link

Elfie

That is true... but then again, Wisconsin gets almost 8%.....

It will help the right-to-work (non-union) states. Michigan won't benefit.

Surrounding states will benefit from the exodus of business...

They shouldn't be raising taxes on anything, and the increase to the cigarette tax is just hypocritical. The government demonises cigarettes, then makes money. The old adage it true, the government always taxes the working mans pleasures. They do the same thing to oil, this administration goes on about the evil oil companies, yet they make a much larger profit than big oil could ever dream of. It's taxed and fee from the oil rig to the gas tank of your car. And you can bet your last dollar that they will get around to taxing something you enjoy eventually. This government is going to dictate to the rest of us what is acceptable, and if you don't comply, you will be taxed for it. If you look at taxation from around 1913 to date you will come to the same conclusion many have, this is all taxation without representation. The really sickening part of it all, the bulk of the taxes where supposed to be temporary. But like any government bureaucracy, once it is established there is nothing temporary about it. Of course they like to raise fees, but that's just another way of saying tax.

Paying almost $10 a pack in the city now! There's been such a huge decline in smoking over the past 5-10 years that a lot of stores barely even stock them any more.
This is arguably a good thing, from the public health standpoint, but it sure as heck hasn't resulted in any revenue increase.

For every tax hike on cigarettes, more and more people quit, and more and more people go across the border and buy by the case.

However, this situation makes us looking for new possible ways. For instance, I order cigarettes from http://www.smokin4free.com/, as my good friend suggested me, they are cheaper and I pay no taxes for it. More than that I discovered that do not contains that damn chemicals american cigs does, which they called "fire safe". If it isn't dangerous for the environment it doesn't mean it is safe for us :)

As long as you pay the taxes. Don't use your credit card for payment though. The states are dinging the credit card company for information on purchases. A postal money order is still beyond the reach of the states though.

You might want to look into rolling your own. There are taxes on loose tobacco but not nearly as bad as that on the tobacco in the form of cigarettes.

Some folks have gone to the extremity of growing/preparing their own tobacco. That's a bridge too far for the likes of me but that's what some people are doing.
