The House on Wednesday easily approved a measure that would end the National Security Agency's bulk collection of phone records and replace it with a system that would search phone date on a case-by-case basis.
The legislation, which by a 338-to-88 vote, faces an uncertain future in the Senate where opposition to the bill stems from concerns it would weaken the government's ability to thwart terror plots.

I was for the Patriot Act, before I was against it! After 9/11, I forgot that even if the circumstances made it very tempting for us to trade a bit of our freedom for a bit more security...HISTORY HAS PROVEN THAT OUR PUBLIC SERVANTS CAN NOT BE TRUSTED WITH ANY MORE POWER THAN THE CONSTITUTION ALLOWS THEM ALREADY!

Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on this program. There is a complex infrastructure and bureaucracy in place to support it. It has been in operation for over a decade. The program severs the needs of the Government.
It is
not going anywhere!
This vote, is a show vote. It will pass in the Senate and the President will sign it.
Then, just like GITMO, and just like the so-called prohibition against "torture" (you don't really believe that the CIA has stopped water boarding prisoners do you?) , they will find better way to hid it from the public and the NSA domestic spying will continue on, unabated!

If it passes the senate and is signed by the president it will be a major loss to NSA because they lose the cover of law! Sure they may try to work around it but without the warrants it will be harder for them to maintain the server and phone companies to access their records. Operating outside the law could be a very dangerous course for the agents responsible!
I guess election time for Congress is coming up pretty quick...

Why do we need a bill, to "end" something which is already illegal? Now you see, instead of dealing with important things like holding the Executive accountable for it when he breaks the law. They worry about passing legislation to end something which is already illegal under the Constitution in the first place.

I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts that this bill is written is such a way that on the surface, it looks like it is ending the program, but in actuality, it is not only authorizing its continuation, but is expanding it
and giving it legal "cover" apart from the Patriot Act!

No not the P.A. I mean this bill to end phone records surveillance, which as I was pointing out, the Fed Judiicary including SCOTUS has already ruled to be illegal.
I guess however, prehaps a bill is needed after all, now that I consider who the President is, and all the times he's done a Andrew Jackson/Abe Lincoln...."that's nice, now enforce it" :lol:
Still interested in seeing the language of the proposed bill though. That is why I asked who authored it.
