imageA program commemorating the 140th anniversary of Robert E. Lee's death is set for Monday, October 11, 2010, featuring a 12:15 PM lecture by Dr. William C. Davis, at Lee Chapel Auditorium at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.

The headline from a Richmond newspaper read:

"News of the death of Robert E. Lee, beloved chieftain of the Southern army, whose strategy mainly was responsible for the surprising fight staged by the Confederacy, brought a two-day halt to Richmond's business activities."

The American flag, which Robert E. Lee had defended as a soldier, flew at half mast in Lexington, Virginia.

General Lee died at his home at Lexington, Virginia at 9:30 AM on Wednesday, October 12, 1870. His last great deed came after the War Between the States when he accepted the presidency of Washington College, now Washington and Lee University. He saved the financially troubled college and helped many young people further their education.

I might add how fitting to the career of a man, son of an American Revolution hero, "Lighthorse" Harry Lee, to forsake his career in the US Army to fight for his homeland.

The answer may lie in these words: "With all my devotion to the Union and the feeling of loyalty and duty of an American citizen, I have not been able to make up my mind to raise my hand against my relatives, my children, my home. I have therefore resigned my commission in the Army, and save in defense of my native State, with the sincere hope that my poor services may never be needed, I hope I may never be called on to draw my sword....." Lee in a letter to his sister, April 20, 1861

Simply he could not fight against his country, kith and kin.

Ya know, when you think about it, 140 years, wasn't all that long ago.
Times have changed, not meaning to belittle their cause, but if they (meaning North and South) could see the Country today, one has to wonder if they would have found a compromise, rather than go to war.

I have no doubt, they would be proud in some respects, but purely disgusted in other ways.

As I have stated, we lost the federated republic at Appomattox.

But even before that, had they the ability to see the future, one has to wonder what they would have done differently.
Like defining marriage, or taxes are a State issue, and put percentage limits on the Fed as opposed to the State, say like, they can only charge 10% what the State charge.
I know it's not realistic, but you have to wonder if they would have restricted the Fed gov even more.

I guess I'm now thinking more about the Founders.

Over the past few years I have emailed Calvin Johnson a few times concerning General Lee and articles that Johnson wrote. Johnson is a nice guy and always answers your emails.

General Lee was a great soldier and very much admired by many people in the South. :)

Short of dissolution of the union early in the history of the country, I'm not sure anything would have prevented the Civil War. Lincoln ( even though he may not have believed it ) preached two things that almost assured the rebellion by the South.

He preached the union actually had existed since the formation of the Continental Congress and formed the states.

He also preached the War was punishment from God for the transgressions of the country supporting Slavery.

Lee as a Christian soldier belongs with other Christian soldiers such as John of Bohemia, King Arthur, King Harold, who won battles, significant ones, but who lost wars, armies and countries, because Christian men must win battles but they can never with the use of raw power wins works; for the great Christian story of which they are apart forbids it; only it in the person of the King once dead but not can have the final victory.

Lee, indeed, lost a fine army, a war and a country.  He became the President of a small college.  Over the short years during which he served in that capacity, there came several thousand mothers, most from the South but no few from the North, to just have General Lee say a few words to their sons.  Lee denied audience to no one and always gave the advice in so many words to each young boy, "Son, deny thyself!"

There is no record of thousands of mothers bringing their sons to General Grant or to General Sherman.  Lee had what Arthur, John, Harold, Roland had:  a life through which Christ lived on and off the battle fields, in private life and in public service.

DEO VINDICE! (God having already vindicated or justified!)

On 12 October, one should think of another great Christian European, an Italian, who sailed in the service of God, of Spain and of Europe, Christopher Columbus.  The hateful deconstructionists of the left have almost successfully banished his name and his day; but he, too, belongs to that pantheon of Christian heroes who dared in the name of Christ face the abyss without fear.

BILLY Defiant

Everything I've read about Robert E. Lee leads me to beleive he was a true gentleman and probably the only sane person in an army of eccentrics.

Tactically, he wasn't much of a soldier without Jackson, he should have listened to Longstreet and taken little round top....things might be different today.
