Title: Democrats Won't Ram Through Obama AG Pick
Post by: redbeard on November 11, 2014, 11:41:31 AM
QuotePresident Obama is now expected to wait for Republicans to take control of the Senate instead of trying to push through his attorney general nominee in a Democrat-dominated lame-duck session, The Hill reported Tuesday.

Senate aides from both sides of the aisle cited a crowded agenda that includes many issues Democrats want to pass before the end of this session of Congress in December. One key issue is an overhaul of the National Security Agency.

That goal is a priority for Vermont Democrat Sen. Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Judiciary Committee who said the committee would have no time to consider the nomination of Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch if it took up a bill to limit the NSA's domestic spying activities.

"It seems likely [the Lynch vote] would be in the next Congress. It's difficult to process an AG that quickly," a Democrat aide told The Hill.

"Leahy says he wants to do the NSA reform bill before doing anything else in committee so it bottles that up," the aide added. "Lynch is a very qualified nominee and should be confirmed no matter who is in charge."

Republicans were preparing to raise strong objections if Obama tried to ram through the nomination to replace the controversial Eric Holder before Republicans take over the Senate in January.

Republican Orrin Hatch of Utah, a member and former chairman of the Judiciary Committee, warned Democrats against trying to consider the nomination before the new Congress convenes.

"Properly considering a nominee to such a significant position as attorney general requires a full and fair process, something that is particularly hard to do in a post-election 'lame-duck' session," Hatch wrote in The Washington Times on Friday.

"No one has been nominated and confirmed to be attorney general in a lame-duck session since before the Civil War."

It is interesting because it makes sense. That is out of character for Obama and his crowd. With all the smoke the dems are blowing about the election this indicates they do understand what happened on November 4.
