People have recognized Cruz has the Trump situation figured. Trump has said he will not attack Cruz as long as Cruz does not attack him. A Cruz win. GOPe truly dislikes Cruz, but they may have to embrace him to keep Trump from taking some of his supporters to a failed third party effort.

True.  It is a dicey situation for the GOPe.  Nothing has been going their way this election cycle.  Everyone they hate is at or near the top of the polls!  Their anointed one is in the gutter with no real possibility of recovery.  He has been unceremoniously rejected by just about all GOP voters!

Cruz is in a stellar situation IMO.  He is the "safety net" that voters will embrace when Trump's rhetoric begins to take a toll.  And I firmly believe it will.  Voters will see that Cruz offers everything they "think" Trump offers and more.  Cruz has a spine of steel and can be trusted.  He is far more brilliant than Trump but just doesn't share Trump's arrogance and ego.  Cruz is a statesman and Trump is a wheeler-dealer blowhard.
