Rahm Emanuel faces wrath of Chicago's black community over police violence

As the mayor addresses counterparts from across the US on policing and urban violence, he faces calls to quit, having lost credibility on just these issues

Jamiles Lartey

Chicago's mayor, Rahm Emanuel, will be back in the national spotlight on Wednesday telling mayors from across the United States how police must work to win back the trust of the communities they serve.

Yet while Barack Obama's former chief of staff is on Capitol Hill trying to shape the future of policing and urban violence at the US conference of mayors, back in his own city there is a growing clamor for him to quit because he has lost all credibility on exactly those issues.

It took them long enough!

It's the Guardian. They're in the UK. Papers there are alway reporting things, the media on this side of the pond, won't touch.

Personally I hope the people in that city can get Rham out of their government real fast like. Given under his watch, there's been all kinds of crazy batshit going on in Chitown anymore.

Which have the affect of being serious, very serious, infringement of the Citizen's Constitutionally enumerated rights.

Such as the right to an attorney, or the right not to incriminate one's self.

QuoteEver since video of the 2014 fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald by a Chicago police officer emerged in December, Emanuel has faced mounting scrutiny and calls to resign, especially from sectors of Chicago's black community who feel he has done nothing to help lift them out of poverty or tackle the daily scourge of gun violence.

The shooting of Laquan McDonald occurred on Oct. 20, 2014.

Black unrest was also occurring in both Ferguson MO and Baltimore MD over the deaths of Michael Brown and Freddie Gray during that time frame.

I'm sure the Chicago streets exploding over another death at the hands of the cops, would have made Ferguson and Baltimore look like kindergarten recess.
How these communities expect anyone to clean up their cities without MORE police involvement is unrealistic, yet these are the same people who have put a target on the backs of police.

The danger to America is not Barack Obama but the citizens capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency.

The choice is getting shot by gang bangers or getting shot by the police? Police involvement does not mean free rein by the police to do as they please.

I agree, the answer is uphold the damn Constitution and law enforcement period. Whether it's a cop, politician, or citizen in question uphold the Constitution, uphold already existent law, and apply that law fairly across the board.

If it weren't so serious, it would be laughable that anyone even asks the question of "what's to be done".

How about apply some common sense to the situation for starters.

And then try being an adult, law abiding member of American society.

That in and of itself would go a long, long, long way towards fixing the "issue".

Free rein?  The only ones I see with free rein are the thugs.  Even when the cops do arrest them, the courts release them back out on the street to commit more mayhem.  Maybe if the cops had free rein and courts to back them up, crime would go down in these cities.

Maybe instead of shooting each other they can shoot some of these libtard politicians.

I cannot think of a single white Democrat mayor who deserves it more, but in this scumbag's case I think the old fashion tar and pillow-feathers treatment is still the best. It is total, absolute, permanent-on-the-internet humiliation.

Don't kill him: keep him alive and point fingers and hold up the tarred photos, and very, very loudly jeer him. He'll off himself if enough of us do it.
