So the water went over the spillway rather than through it?
It's worse than that. The spillway pretty much completely failed, the water started cutting into the actual earthen part of the dam, running the risk of catastrophic failure.
Check out this video, here's what they aren't telling people and it really pisses me off, because they're putting millions of lives in danger.

So I am correct when I say the democrats committed incredibly slow stupidity that helped no one.

Very correct!
Now the story gets even worse. Upstream on the Sacramento river, we have Shasta dam, they are less than 6' feet from brimming and just announced they too will be releasing major amounts of water within the next 5 days, add to that, another storm system predicted to dump another 15" plus of rain to California watershed area.
I'm telling ya, the valley will be flooding in many places, even having levee breaches, with billions in property loss.

I have a pretty good idea the people aren't going to let the Dims slide any longer, they know it was Marxists that fucked this whole thing up.

And there it is. The left sabotaged itself. Their bureaucracy is drowning them. Holy metaphor Batman!

Yet despite the know facts, you can pretty much guarantee the major media outlets will be spinning like F-15 turbines to place the blame on conservatives, republicans, and probably even Trump.

As the flow increases....

I know its a disaster, but I find it fascinating to watch, just the incredible power of nature.

Old saying, "pay me now or pay me later."    Some people must learn it the hard way.

I would say from the looks of the spillway it was a Union job.

Solar, how do you think this will compare to the Katrina flooding when it's all said and done?

Also, how does the engineering to protect the smelt compound this problem?

How involved is the Corps of Engineers? A guarantee of disaster when they are involved.

I thought they were pretty good at dredging. After they get their hole is the problem.

Good question, by contract, they have an equal and shared responsibility with the SDWR (state dept of water resources), but at this point, no one seems to know what the fuck they're doing, and plan B looks like finger pointing is about to be initiated.

Funny thing is, the last news released was yesterday, and this after a day of constant updates.
I'm guessing they have only bad news to report, "so don't say a damn word or you're fired"!

And there you have it, a slap in the face to libs that think man is all powerful against Mother Nature, that man can affect climate, when in truth, we're all mere observers, and when nature wants change, there's not a damned thing man can do to stop it.

I doubt the Smelt like mud and debris. Hopefully, this will wipe out the Smelt population and the left will need another excuse to throw away/sacrifice 70% of the state's freshwater to their sea Gods.
