According to a poll commissioned by the Canadian Medical Association, Canadians overwhelmingly agree that the soaring costs are unsustainable.

In the survey 59% of Canadians agree that governments will not be able to fund health care while funding other programs and services.

Provision of public health care is reaching the crisis state. For an example in Alberta cost of health care has beenn raised by 17% in the 2010/11 provincial operating budget. Some of the have not provinces receive transfer payments from the federal government, while those deemed as have provinces do not.

Alberta's Health Care Plan does not include prescription drugs, except for seniors and that program will change in July.

While Canadian Health Care is not perfect, it can be said with confidence that no one would be rushing to give it up. Canadians are compassionate about their health care.

When Canadian were pressed on how to solve the sustainability problem 91% said it has to be made more efficient. 35% of those said that they were either confident or somewhat confident that politicians could find a solution.

Dr. Anne Doig, president of the Canadian Medical Association, said it's clear the solution to the growing crisis is not an easy one.

"Canadians recognize that, while important, finding efficiencies is not a panacea for the problem of skyrocketing health care costs," Doig said in news release announcing the survey findings.

Canada's Soviet-Style Health Care System

Canadian healthcare costs have mushroomed by more than 260 percent over the past 15 years to a whopping $130 billion in 2011, with an increasing portion funded by debt.

Due largely to runaway health care costs, the provinces racked up a combined deficit of over $30 billion in the 2010/11 fiscal year. Health care already swallows over half of revenues in Ontario and Quebec, and most other provinces will soon be facing the same debilitating prospect.

Making matters even worse, global fallout from the Eurozone debt crisis, combined with continuing American economic lethargy, are almost certain to reduce provincial and federal revenues.

Father of Canadian healthcare system now disowning it

Ever hear of Claude Castonguay?  Maybe not, but those who follow the health-care debate have certainly heard of his creation.  Castonguay fathered the single-payer system in Quebec that locked out private insurance, the one which advocates of nationalized health care in the US love to cite as a success story.  However, Castonguay has reached a far different conclusion about his creation:

Back in the 1960s, Castonguay chaired a Canadian government committee studying health reform and recommended that his home province of Quebec — then the largest and most affluent in the country — adopt government-administered health care, covering all citizens through tax levies.

The government followed his advice, leading to his modern-day moniker: "the father of Quebec medicare." Even this title seems modest; Castonguay's work triggered a domino effect across the country, until eventually his ideas were implemented from coast to coast.

Four decades later, as the chairman of a government committee reviewing Quebec health care this year, Castonguay concluded that the system is in "crisis."

"We thought we could resolve the system's problems by rationing services or injecting massive amounts of new money into it," says Castonguay. But now he prescribes a radical overhaul: "We are proposing to give a greater role to the private sector so that people can exercise freedom of choice."

Senior's surgery postponed for fourth time
Hospital apologizes after 81-year-old is turned back at OR door

An 81-year-old Courtenay man has been bumped from surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital four times in the past 18 months.

The latest incident was early Wednesday, when George Harrison was actually on a gurney about to enter the operating room.

The last-minute problem, hospital staff told him, was there were so many emergency cases around there would not be an appropriate bed for him after the surgery.

His wife Shirley said the staff had been profusely apologetic, but her husband had suffered abdominal pains for two years and this was the fourth time he had been booked for surgery only to have the operation postponed.

On the previous occasions, he got either two - or in one case four weeks' notice that it was being put off, and they now felt like it was never going to happen.

"I really would like to know where all the healthcare money is going," she said. "I know for sure it's not going to our hospital.

Mary Lou Frye, 64, has had her brain surgery postponed six times.

A woman whose brain surgery has been cancelled six times is a victim of the chaos at Royal Columbian Hospital, NDP health critic Adrian Dix said yesterday.

"This is a human example of what we mean when [we say] there isn't enough capacity," Dix said.

"The number of surgeries that have been cancelled has become epidemic at Royal Columbian."

Medical costs in Canada can also be tied to the rise in Canadian drug abuse (and trafficking).

Drug rehab falls under the canadain health care system.

Something Americans should consider before we make the mistake of drug legalization inthe US.
