I've shot pistols before, but never something like an AR-15.
Squeeze lightly on the trigger and the resulting explosion of firepower is humbling and deafening (even with ear protection).
The recoil bruised my shoulder, which can happen if you don't know what you're doing. The brass shell casings disoriented me as they flew past my face. The smell of sulfur and destruction made me sick. The explosions — loud like a bomb — gave me a temporary form of PTSD. For at least an hour after firing the gun just a few times, I was anxious and irritable.
Now watch the 7 year old girl her first time.

Before the AR-15 (1962) there was the AR-10 (1955).
It's just like the AR-15, except it shoots 7.62 NATO
(which performs almost as well as 30-.06 !)

I find it interesting that people see this as an offense weapon, when in fact the caliber chosen was designed to maim, in turn taking 3 off the battlefield, two to carry the victim, still alive.
Like any small caliber round, they feel more like a sting when entering and unless you hit a vital organ, brain, heart etc, the attacker will keep coming.
Give me a shot gun any day, and if they're out of range, I have a 30.6 with a scope.
As much fun as these weapons are to fire, there are 100s on the mkt far more lethal.
One of the reasons there has been such a rise in the instances of CHILD SOLDIERS is that the weapons like the AR and the AK are so LITE, so easy to handle and the ammo doesn't weigh so much, little or no recoil from their weapon due to the design. Previously, you needed a strong person to carry around the Springfield 30-06 the 30 40 Kraig, the Garand and the M-14. I've shot each of those weapons, hunted with a few and one thing I remember is how heavy they were, then again so was the roughly 30 cal ammo in magazines.
SO these modern weapons are DESIGNED for smaller, weaker persons, children and the slight of build

The AK-47 (7.62x39) is considered a medium power rifle,
compared to the M1 Garand (30-.06, aka 7.62x63)
or M14 (7.62 NATO, aka 7.62x51, aka Winchester .308)
both of which are considered high power rifles.
The U.S. Army adopted the M16 (5.56x45,
similar to .223 Remington, but loaded to higher pressure
http://www.rifleshootermag.com/rifles/ar-15/5-56-and-223-are-they-different/)
in the early 1960s
to wound and not kill the enemy.
This was to allow soldiers to carry more rounds,
among other benefits.
The Russians responded with the AK-74 (5.45x39)
which is basically an AK-47 chambered for rounds
similar to (but not interchangeable with) those used by the M16.

Sixty years ago, soldiers aimed shots at one another.
These days, they spray a bunch of shots in the general direction.
A bandolier for the M1 Garand has 10 pouches for 8 round clips - 80 shots.
Today's U.S. soldiers carry about 8 magazines with 28 rounds each - 224 shots.

Good post
Everything you are posting is 100% correct especially about the light round wounding instead of killing....whatever the intent the 5.56 round even in Military issue FMJ was a killer. I recall a number of people killed with the M-16's, it had such a high velocity that someone shot in the shoulder might have the round come out their head or bounce around inside them.
I have seen people hunt with the 5.56 round also, deer and other big game, these hunters swear by the round as an efficient deer killer. I grew up with the Penna philosophy that you deer hunt with the biggest baddest cannon you can find, usually a 30-30 or a 30-06.
Virginia doesn't allow deer hunting with that round but west Virgina does...and they have some BIG deer up there, A friend of mine who owns a Farm in WV kills deer rountinly with his ruger mini 14....he hot loads his own rounds though.

Ohio doesn't allow ANY rifle to be used for deer hunting.
The best allowed is a shotgun with deer slug or buckshot.
Or a .50 caliber muzzleloader.
I suppose that could hit pretty hard.

Michigan --- a
hunting state unlike O-ho-ho --- is amply-prepared to accept your hunting tourist dollars. May I suggest the Upper Peninsula? My father had terrific luck near Iron Mountain for decades, bagging a buck a year with his .30-30.

At least half of Michigan is very thinly populated,
where there's hardly a speck of land in Ohio
that's not within a mile of at least a few houses.
The shotgun restriction means the hunter has to
get within shotgun range of the deer.
Still, hunters took 188,000 deer last year.

My wife used to have a sister who lived near iron Mountain. I loved to go up there, absolutely beautiful land and friendly people. I envy your Dad hunting up there, the deer are a lot bigger that they are down here, guess its too hot down here from all the global warming, or is it climate change, no no it changed again didn't it?

I've only been up there once in a literal drive-through. Deer tend to feed better up there, based on average reports from my hunter pals. As for greater numbers up there, I'd suspect that's partly due to less traffic to mow them down.
Tell me, I've always wanted to know, living so close to Ohio as I do.
Do you trap a buckeye or just shoot it? How big a trap? How big the caliber?

Either one will work, its cooking them that takes practice. After I retire I would love to spend one of the winter months up there, we don't get any snow that amounts to much here and i would like to see it.

Iron Mountain - been there, reminded me of Ladysmith, the Skeeters & Black Flies are relentless, could have lost a pound just stepping outside at night.
When I lived in Lacrosse, we drove a 10 ton stake truck for work and the favorite was the driving around on the country roads at night, all the "eyes" were deer staring at us, we'd be barreling along at 55, turn the ignition off for about 5 seconds, and switch back on - BOOM!!! Deer running everywhere, and of course into the "custom" grate/grill of the truck - couldn't let good venison go to waste. We called it, "Grilled Venison".

Winter's fine as long as the heating fuel and liquor hold out. Oh, wait. After you're drunk and cold you can always drive a snowmobile for another tank of LP gas for your back-up heater. That or chop down trees in the state park up there. That's 90% of the U.P., by the way.
