In summary, the state passed a law that requires lights on all buggies.
The argument against is the Amish base their belief that God will protect them better than a flashing light.
Keep in mind, this particular group, 80 thousand strong does not use electricity for anything, even a solar power light.
They do use reflective strips, but they are still getting ticketed.

If they are using reflective tape/strips on the back/front/side of their buggies/wagons, than pushing for lights is just the state bulling their power. Horse and buggy does not need headlights to see the road. If they were not a religious group would the state give a damn?

Yep, they generally move at a fast walking pace and don't need lights beyond oil burner lamps.
Yes, it appears the State is going after them in even more ways.
They closed an old schoolhouse because they refused to hook up to city sewer. Not because they love outhouses, but because that would have required an electric disposal pump. The Amish don't believe in electricity.
I've a feeling Trump's DOJ will put an end to the abuse of their First Amendment Rights

Pretty much if I am passing through an Amish area, I will expect the occasional horse an buggy and drive safely when I am near them. Besides, I don't expect too many horse and buggies at night. That doesn't sound like their normal pattern.

Maybe they should adapt the Mennonite's ways and use modern things on a limited basis. Nothing wrong with using an automobile for limited and specific usage.
With all these lawyers with cameras on the street I'm shocked we have so much crime in the world.
This challenge to law and order is always the start to loosing our constitutional rights.
How come nobody was interested in educating people about these rights until online videos got monetization?

To them doing otherwise would be blasphemous to their religion. Like allowing your gay daughter to bring her girlfriend home to live. Somethings just aren't acceptable.

I would be more worried about keeping them away from the rainbow flags, pride parades, and gay culture. Hopefully, you taught her to be independent and responsible in life to live on her own with a decent job and not make stupid mistakes. You also have that "dad" power that nobody is good enough for your daughter (even same sex).

But, are you saying the Mennonites are wrong? Don't they worship the same God?

I don't know if you misunderstood what I wrote, but that didn't make much sense in context to ones faith.
My point was, they have faith in their God far more than they do in someone else not hitting them.

I think the point here is asking someone to go against their beliefs just so they can conform to worldly values that they don't agree with.  Toy

I always though buggies had a car batteries in them.

QuoteAmish do not permit public electricity, but do use batteries in many forms.

Most Amish buggies use bright lighting for safety, which is powered by a car or marine battery carried in or mounted under the buggy.  Amish use flashlights in the home and when going outside at night.  They are also big users of LED lighting.

Batteries power calculators, alarm clocks, cash registers, drills, electric fences, and even basic word processors used in some Amish businesses.

Amish forbid public electricity in the home because a) it permits any technology (television, internet) to be plugged in and used, and b) it is a symbolic connection to "the world".

Batteries provide a limited source of power for a range of practical uses, and are thus seen to be acceptable, even by the most conservative Amish.

So it sort of makes the point.... not of this world.  Thanks.  Toy

There are different types of Amish and Mennonites, ranging from ultra-conservative to progressive. The more orthodox Amish are called Old Order., while the more liberal Amish are called New Order. Similar distinctions exist within the Mennonite communities.
The Mennonites, the old order stand by their faith, which is cemented in the 19th century.
If there is an evil to be found in this issue, it's rooted in Govt, that blatantly stands against our First Amendment.
