Killer tune! Funny how it was shortened for the Sullivan show.

Here's an M&P knock-off I learned to like back then....Spanky & Our Gang.

I spent nearly three years thinking Spanky was the Mammas and the Pappas...
With only two AM radio stations, one being rock, we didn't have a lot of exposure.

The sound was similar. Spanky had a voice like Mama Cass, but she looked like just one person.

Remember the signature M&P song "Monday, Monday?" Spanky and company had their biggest hit with this one.

Here's a gem from thirty years ago. The song itself dates back to 1958, when it was a big doo-wop hit for the Skyliners, backed by the Lennie Martin Orchestra. (Martin was one of the team of songwriters who wrote it.) The tune has been covered by many, including Art Garfunkel, Don McLean, and even Guns 'N' Roses, for God's sake. (That one's pretty awful.)

In 1991, country artist Ronnie Milsap was one of the fading kings of the country music charts. He had churned out 35 #1 hits (!!!!) and taken home six Grammy awards since breaking onto the scene in 1973. A number of his later successes were "crossovers," appealing to his country audience and to pop and adult listeners. (Remember "Lost in the Fifties Tonight?")

Milsap's treatment of "Since I Don't Have You" stands out for me for a number of reasons. His voice is unfailingly true and pleasant. The arrangement, while seemingly simple, is masterful. The background harmonies (see the "beehive blondes" in the video) start small and build to a perfect crescendo. The sax solo in the bridge is a marvelous inclusion. The depressed flats and minors worked into the final stanzas are like icing on a baker's masterpiece. And the video is tasteful, nostalgic, and downright sweet.

Enjoy.

That music comes natural to him. Before he hit it big with country in the 70's he played the lounge circuit in ATL. His specialty was Ray Charles stuff along with other music of that time.

I got to see Milsap perform live in a small indoor venue in Cincinnati (used to be called Bogart's) maybe 30 years ago. His hit-list star had faded by that time, and his show was almost exclusively comprised of his own top hits from the past. (He had one hell of a lot of them to choose from!!!)

The food was excellent, the service was top-notch, and I got to watch a blind man dance on top of his own piano. I am not making this up. At one point during his show, Milsap climbed onto that grand piano, danced, and climbed back down without another person's assistance, and without falling or stumbling. It was intense.

I rank it with the best shows I've ever seen, and I've seen a bunch.
