ChloƩ Zhao Wins Best Director Oscar for 'Nomadland,' News Censored in China

""I've been thinking a lot lately of how I keep going when things get hard," she said. "I think it goes back to when I was a kid, when I was growing up in China, my dad and I used to play this game. We would memorize Chinese poems and texts. We would recite them together and try to finish each other's sentences."

It was the first Oscar for the 39-year-old Zhao, who was born in Beijing and went to college and film school in the United States. "Nomadland" was her third feature.

"Nomadland" also won Best Picture, while McDormand won Best Actress for the third time in her career.

Despite Zhao's history-making night, her success has yet been recognized by her birth country of China. She has been met with muted response, and state media in China had not celebrated her win by late Monday morning, with CCTV and Xinhua, the two main state media not posting her win.

China's ruling Communist Party has been playing down Zhao's success due to the director's past comments that were critical of the regime."

If she was critical of America - it'd be plastered all over the Chinese media.
We've watched a number of Korean films - not much for the subtitles - but, they've got this sort of "innocence" to them (other than the martial arts films), a different kind of humor, like "Girl Robot" - just kinda has you thinking WTH...?.. and laughing the next minute.

I can't say we've enjoyed a great American movie in a long time.  Seems like American movies have to get some political statement stuck into them, instead of just entertain.

Did anyone with any real credibility show up at this back slapping, self congratulatory event?
Nope, just the very people this nation has come to despise!

Ok, so the Korean DIDN'T really win with a better movie - Hollywood SUCKED SO BAD... I could have won with a Super-8 film of a day at the beach!
