So I just watched gone with the wind tonight for the first time in my life and I gotta say WOW.
What an amazing portrayal of the culture of the south. You really get a feel for what they were losing and what it was like down there during shermans march and post war. Seems like the prewar south is the closest thing america has ever had to lords and nobility like medieval europe. Those fools were all gung ho for the war but in reality the south was very ill prepared for one.

And I didnt detect even a hint of racism, not once. Never did anyone discourage or belittle any 'darkies' due to their race. Oh there was the usual talking down to servants by the rich and powerful, but you see the exact same thing in shows like downton abbey or upstairs/downstairs. Heck many of her slaves stayed with her after they were free. They were her 'folk' and she felt a duty to take care of them. The blacks and whites were often friends and had very good relationships.

The left just hates it because the main characters are slave owners. They want to silence history.

Also it was made in 1939 so I feel it also is a window into that generation as well.
I noticed Rhett questioned whether hell existed.
I noticed that marriage was a HUGE deal, as was even the hint of impropriety, yet you still got the feeling affairs occurred on occasion.
The girls wanted to get married and have kids, heck they were desperate to do so, not believing they could be happy without starting a family.
Yet at the same time, love continually takes a back seat to practicality when it comes to marriage. Like they tried to pick a spouse who they had alot in common with, but love was something that they worked at and came later.

So anyways those are just my initial reactions at this masterpiece of a movie.

It is also interesting, nothing personal...  people many years later - make observations on a movie, which had no bearing on the movie at the time it was produced.  Again, nothing personal - just things which meant so little, are *now* scrutinized, meant nothing.

I DO wonder if "running the house" was given over to the servants...  LOL, like hiring a family manager?
It wasn't that many decades/years ago, wealthy families had servants & maids - they were well compensated - to "manage" the household affairs, so the family heads was free to focus on business.  The color of skin had nothing to do with it.  Curiously, the servants were expected to help "train" the kids in the proper ways...  Not just a southern thing, servants were as much of the family as an elder brother or sister, but without legal rights (unless granted).   Where this "beating of slaves" came from... probably a rarity.
All animals are created equal; Some just take longer to cook.   Survival is keeping an eye on those around you...

Not sure what you mean by the top part, but yes, mammy was the head of their house. She had delivered 3 generations of their kids, and when they did something she didnt approve of she let them know, yelling hard at them without a care in the world to being beaten or punished in any way. She stayed with them during the war and later when she got rich.

Damn, haven't seen it in 60 years, totally forgot the premise, but leave it to the left to bring attention to a classic most people had forgotten about just to distract.
Here's my take, a company buys the rights to the film, but it no longer generates revenue, Right?

So one of two things happened, their financiers contact the media with a trigger story on the movie, the left finds something to get upset over and instant attention, and suddenly the movie is once again in demand.

Was it distraction and a way to piss people off, or a way to make money off a long dead movie?

There's always a money angle...

I was born and reared in the South and believe me Gone With The Wind is in no way an accurate indication of what the South is or was like. All it is is a portrayal of the North's fucked up twisted notions of what the South is.
Crazy but not stupid!

I spent 4 years down by clarksville TN.

Im not sure what you are talking about. In the movie they showed an elite upper class of 'nobility' and slave owners and showed that way of life fall apart.

When I was in the south I didnt see any slave owners. And it seems the south today is known as sorta the heart of country music and culture (I was 45min from Nashville and visited it a couple times). They have a lot of pride in their country style and upbringing. Lots of appalachian and irish roots.

I actually read that alot of the elites from the prewar south left and formed a community down in south america which is still alive to this day and celebrates their southern heritage.

Tennesse is just getting your toe in the water. BTW don't forget the Scots who settled in the South. It was their music which lent its sound that formed the basic foundations of country and blue grass music.

Just what I meant- didn't want the conversation to become "personal".  My Grandfather had a Maid and Steward, imported from Manchester, England - probably because he was an English Gentleman, and wanted to live like one.  He was very successful in business, and continually focused on "the business" - a company name everyone has heard of.  He never owned slaves, or took advantage of people - he compensated them quite well, while he could afford them.  The servants were MUCH more dignified than us "farm kids".

    no doubt. Farm kids are notoriously crass.

Even tho we are a service based economy today the job of servant has largely died out it seems. I suppose technology and capitalism are the culprits. Plus our culture of everyones special makes young people not want to be anyones servant.

It does not help, to hear radio personalities imply "burger flippers" are jobs of simpletons in the service sector.  IMO, any job worth doing, is worth doing right & enjoying.

We admired the servant/butler guy.  We'd walk around, work glove in hand, checking for dust and slapping this or that (probably got that from cartoons, not this guy).  To this day, one of my favorite movies is the "Scarlet Pimpernel (1982)

(skip ahead to the 9min mark for a delicious rendition of how we farm kids acted)

Another classic favorite, "The Count of Monte Cristo" (2002) version. - my kids liked the sword play...

100 years from now people will look back at all the 'woke' garbage cranked out and curl their lip like so many do with the movies made in early hollywood.
