Yup...

While working at a racing stable in Florida, I had ONE opportunity to ride Slim Pickens racing Mules around the track - the trainer (riding the other mule) told me to "Stop laughing".  I couldn't help myself, it was such a JOKE, racing ASSES around an oval track.  a few weeks later, I was fired... by an ASS... for not lying to the owner of the stable.  Poor Slim Pickens, he never knew how badly he was being ripped off by these shady characters - probably didn't care.

I'd take an ass over a horse, any day. Horses are pretty much stupid, but an ass thinks and keeps you out of trouble.

FYI Mule Days happens on memorial day weekend in Bishop, CA every year. Just ask me how I know.

The last thing I'd take is a Thoroughbred or one of these European Warm-bloods, pretty much stupid, and don't live long.

I'd take a mix, Morab, 1/2 Morgan + 1/2 Arab.  I want the big hooves, strong legs & muscles of a Morgan, the courage, endurance (respiratory tract) & intelligence of an Arab (domestic Arab, not that high-strung junk from Egypt).  I did quite well on Endurance Rides with that mix, they weren't flashy movers, but could Trot & Canter all day long (once they were conditioned).

Meh, I ran over a Quarterhorse with one... I never seen a "JB" so pissed off in my life, he came charging back with his mallet, looking for blood, so, we ran into him again, and knocked his precious little Quarterhorse to the ground... again.  When we played Cowboy Polo, it was definitely a spectator sport - just keep the 1st aid kit handy, and a phone for the Vet.  Even Wifey wonders how I managed to "stay alive", practically indestructible... - God must have had a legion of angels guarding me!

Arab is a fine horse, it was my favorite for running cattle. He was a trained cutting horse, but anything beyond his training confused him. He'd rather be running a hard mile than walking. Total kick in the ass.

They definitely *are* quick thinkers, if they're trained for the job.  We had a bunch of them.
