We care about our vets - or do we?

How many of us have donated to the wounded warrior project?

How any of us have hired a vet?

How many of us visited a cemetery on Memorial Day rather than attend a BBQ?

I have hired 32 vet in my life time.    (25 men and 7 ladies)

I do both.  (I go to 3 cemeteries and do one BBQ for the living)

It makes me somewhat uppity when people accuse me of doing something, or not doing something based on their tiny parameters of definition.

Yes, my family and I have a BBQ for Memorial Day, because my father, who is a Veteran, wants to.  He also keeps the flags for both my great-uncle, and my grandfather to place on Memorial Day, and he has asked that I continue that when he passes.

Memorial day us not about veterans as a whole (that would be Veterans day), it is to remember those who served and have passed, but even more to remember those who have passed because they served.

Wounded Warriors is an excellent organization, though I think they would be even better served if they allowed religious donations.  I do not have funds for any charitable giving ATM.  Many of my friends do send expired coupons to AFPs, because they allow them to be used up to 90 days after expiration.  There is also a program through recruiting offices where you can donate working ereaders to men currently stationed overseas, or to those who have returned.  All you have to do is return it to factory settings.

I never asked any of my contractors working on my house if they were vets, it nst never came up in the vetting process, so I don't know if I have hired a vet or not.

I feel like I care about their sacrifice, perhaps you would disagree.

I blow off the idea that having a BB-Q is somehow in poor taste, like the purists complaining about Christmas being so commercial, celebrating a day keeps it locked in the minds, whether it's a simple BB-Q or buying gifts on a certain day, it guarantees it will not be lost to following generations.

So what are the opinions on government funded aid to Veterans?

One the one hand they have served the State so the state has a obligation no?
On the other hand they knew the risks joining up and should be satisfied with what they got, no?

My favourite American president Calvin Coolidge, vetoed a civil war pension bill and a WW1 pension bill from what I have gathered. And is quoted as saying "Patriotism bought and paid for is not Patriotism". Though I don't always trust famous dead people quote on the internet, the quote has a point.

I'm not making a argument against private donations to veterans, but in specific question what are you're thoughts on federal aid/welfare for veterans.

Edit: Only charity I have done for US veterans is bought a DVD about North Korea in which the money goes to veterans of that war, never received the DVD, maybe was not a legitimate site hmm.

Our soldiers are professionals, part of their contract with the state is that we recompense their service, including housing loans, education, and if injured, we make them as close to whole as possible.

I have no problems with my tax dollars going to the Vets and soldiers.  They deserve the best health care, for free, should be tax-exempt for the rest of their lives, and should have any training or education they want, unlimited.  This is where our tax dollars should be going -- taking care of our defenders and heavy defense spending.

See your county Vet rep, get him to schedule you an appointment at another VA hospital, they aren't all the same.
Also, contact the DAV (a private group), if they feel you have a case, they'll take it probono.
