I watched a doc that included history and imperial court intrigue in the past. Then I got the two mixed up in my head. IMO they are kinda the same. China has a history of trying to select the best not the most popular.

Col. Macgregor said that Xi  is functioning as emperor and the Chinese people are fine with that. Maybe he is right.
You have to work your way up in the party for decades and not screw up.

Yeah, based on China's timeline of politics, Communism is a relatively new concept compared to centuries of Dynastic rule.
And now we're watching the unraveling of Xi's leadership as the CCP begins its purge of his generals.
Something had to give with Trump's global leadership and the killing off of China's Communist prosperity.
It would appear that hardliner Commies are taking over the country.

With the economy in full blown collapse, and people rebelling against the party, the commies are inevitably on the verge of a crackdown on civil disobedience; another Tiananmen moment is about to take place.
My money says the people will be set up for failure, making the people believe resistance is futile.
Probably midsummer, as they try an invasion of Taiwan as cover for their atrocities against the people. 

I could be wrong, but having observed Chinese communism for decades, this seems par for the course.
