Quote from: Possum on January 08, 2023, 08:19:37 AMSolar, thanks. I kept thinking why would someone pick windows 8 to hack when there probably are not that many people still using it. I like it, better than 11. 11 in my opinion has nothing to brag on. Like I said, there is nothing on that laptop to hack, but windows acts like I'm going to lose my first born if I don't change it out.

Windows 8 is still used by ~3% of the market of desktop users... that's definitely not insignificant...

I think with Windows updates, as Solar eluded to, it's sort of damned if you do, damned if you don't.  There are updates that have to happen, but others that don't and seem to cause problems.  (as of late, for this client I brought on board, I'm having to use Windows)...

I'd say give it a try.  Ubuntu 22.10 (the latest) isn't like the old Linux days.  Installs are easy peezy.  I've been forced to use Windows 10 lately and now have first-hand experience between the differences.

Quote from: VVet69 on January 09, 2023, 03:02:08 PMI installed Linux Mint on my old Windows 8 HP laptop. I had no previous experience with Linux but was able to install Linux and keep Windows 8 and dual boot into either one.  There is a lot help on the internet about this.  Make sure you back up your files, export you browser shortcuts and get a physical copy of usernames and passwords before doing this.  If you have questions we can help.

Mint is good too... I used that for a while back in the day...

As far as I can find out, Firefox is the only browser that will continue updates for the now dying windows 8. But they do not say for how long. I would feel better if I had a better internet service, but Hughes net is the only option until mid to late 2023 when we should be getting starlink. I don't do any banking on that computer, not even Amazon.

But to be honest, all the knowledge I have about computers you could put in a thimble and roll it around. So, I guess if I ever get into town I'll have to stop by the old best buy and upgrade.

I'm like you with holding on... I've had this laptop I'm on now since 2018...
