I was in Korea when the Military stopped using MPC, (Military payment Currency).
One day they just announced you have 30 days to turn it in, or you lose, and it was just as good as the dollar, though easier to forge, which the North had been doing.

There was panic in the streets because only certain citizenry were being allowed to turn it in, military and Korean elites/govt dignitaries.
I think in the end everyone was allowed, but it kept the money out of the North.

Point being, good or bad, the change happened in 30 days. Man, I had forgotten all about that 50 years ago.
