I figure that the Impreza has the functionality (cargo area, fold down seats), and some zip in it. I can also consider a Crosstrek.

I had an Impreza, gave it to the  wife. She simply loved it, but I prefer a truck so I can see.
But it was probably the best car I ever owned, never gave me any issues, that was a new 2007 back then.
Now they're loaded with all kinds of electronics.

My only complaint was 2nd gear, too long, climbing hills with poor acceleration, but third was fine if you had the RPM' up, but not really good on steep grades.
But for a HWY car, it rocked, sooo comfortable...

I need to start going to a dealer and preparing to purchase a new car for Spring. Any last minute advice?

One more thing to consider.

Went to my dealer. After discussing options, they had the car that ended up decided on while on the lot, that just came in and isn't even prepped yet.

I will probably go get it tomorrow.

Subaru is one of the few brands still not suffering the malady of the entire car Mkt.
Auctions are filling up with unsold new cars, dealers can't sell because banks refuse to get stuck with a loan they may have to eventually eat. So no sales.

Look up auction sales on new cars.

I had to fight to get a small discount, but I got one. You would think that they throw you a bone or two to sell a car in this market.

They kept going on and on about financing. They kept trying to push low percentage rates, but at lesser months with higher payments. Higher percentage rates for longer periods. No wonder people can't keep up with payments, and they get repossessed. It is not good for anybody.

I don't know if it's still like this, but out here, I bought two Subarus for the Shingle Springs dealer here in Ca.
Both times, they beat every dealer in the West, including some beyond Denver.
They didn't seem to care, moving inventory made them more money than jacking up the end price.

Try looking at what the rest of the Mkt is selling for in your area for the Cross trek.
