Without R&D ... do you ever learn to appreciate the innovators? Two wastebaskets, packed with "mistakes", learning how to make a very tiny mechanism, over years.
Heard some guy mutter, "I could do that...". :thumbdown: I don't think so.
That "thin layer" Jobs mentions, IMO, is the appearance of the finished product. The time spent doing R&D - looking back - had I known back then, what I know now - forget it. The money spent... OMG, I could have been fishing!
What's really strange, to hear someone say they desperately want to "start a business", with some innovative, unique, new idea or product - but, can't think of anything to develop (and probably lack the patience). "Help me come up with some ideas & can market... you know, something you don't want to mess with, that I could make money at." :rolleyes: Do I just hand them my credit cards?

As a veteran of 8 startups and developer of 2 or 3 innovations that touch almost everyones life today I think I just might have some skin in the game. But I don't know how I could have done anything else with my life. It wasn't a choice that I was free to make. You do what ya gotta do.

I'm with you! 3 startups, working on the 4th, and with this one, 3 things that are entirely unique, I produce at home & sell.
Some ideas are just, too good to pass on - and I gotta admit, the best ideas come from idiots (not stupid people, but, people who still have unpolluted, raw ideas, which trigger greater ideas). I *wish* I could do... "this" - hmmmm.....
The WORST are the armchair engineers, IMO, who never successfully designed or built anything. Leaving nothing to chance, everything is over-engineered to the point of unworkability & impracticable - definitely beyond the price anyone would pay.

That's funny, we both use the very same definition of stupid.
I'm used to being called crazy but I've been vindicaded more than once in my own time when I was proven in time to be absolutely on target and correct, the people calling me crazy simply lacked the necessary foward vision.
