Why cant we let our military do their job?

Quote from: Troops sent by Trump to border will fly drones, gather intel — and clear brush, too
The Pentagon offered new details Monday about the types of activities National Guard troops would perform while deployed by President Trump to the U.S.-Mexico border, but critical questions remain about how long the operation will last and how much it will cost.

National Guard troops will provide air support through drones and light-, medium- and heavy-lift helicopters, Lt. Col. Jamie Davis, a Defense Department spokesman, said in a statement to The Washington Post. They will also help maintain roads and other infrastructure, clear vegetation and assist with facility maintenance, in addition to operating surveillance systems, including cameras and blimps, Davis said.

They will not be arresting migrants or carrying out armed patrols along the border.

Describing the mission as a support role for the Department of Homeland Security, Davis confirmed that the troops won’t necessarily carry weapons. “National Guard personnel will only be armed for their own self-protection to the extent required by the circumstances of the mission they are performing,” Davis said.

A military's job is to break stuff. Let them break stuff (that's why they have all the cool toys).

I understand your frustration. However, your question is answered by your premise. We are a country of laws and border security is a domestic law enforcement issue. The framers of the Constitution clearly did not desire the military to enforce domestic laws, but to protect our country. Consequently, that is the way they are trained. I have no problem with the NG performing duties they are trained to do and freeing up the Border Patrol to do what they are trained to do.

There is much here, so read between the lines.

heavy-lift helicopters, maintain roads and other infrastructure, clear vegetation and assist with facility maintenance

One merely has to define what it means by the phrase "maintenance".
This could easily fall under paving dirt roads and why do they need heavy lift choppers? Could it be to ferry in new border fence panels, as in "maintaining" the old border fence?

But you've got to love the spin on this one: troops won’t necessarily carry weapons. Butttt.... “National Guard personnel will only be armed for their own self-protection

What's the use of bringing in the might of the military without exercising it? One weekend a month/two weeks a year can cycle enough soldiers/airman to help out along with the long termers who run things. Let them (with the guidance of Border Patrol) patrol, detain, document, return (at least to Mexico regardless of what country they are from), report (accurate numbers), and prevent this cycle again (destroy pathways they use like tunnels and pathways).

You might as well give Border Patrol those responsibilities, the cool toys, and the extra personnel.

Where was the outrage when Obozao used the NG along the border?

Note the date of the article.

I disagree.  The security of the borders of this nation is essential to national security. These aren't the calm, easy, post WWI, pre-depression, pre WWII days of 1924 when the Border Patrol was created to take over for military patrols. Today we face circumstances with respect to the border that can legitimately defined as clear and present dangers to national security. That makes securing our borders a job for the military, and time to draw back law enforcement to deal exclusively with people already here illegally.

I do not disagree with your premise. However, as a country of laws, the law would have to be changed to allow the military to undertake domestic law enforcement.

Defending the national border is not the same as reckless driving, theft, or drunken behavior.

The "Bandit" and "Snowman" took beer across state lines: that's a state crime. Crossing into our sovereign border is a federal crime (regardless if you support them coming over, regardless if you feel if we should have open borders, regardless if you feel bad for the person, regardless if Big Enos & Little Enos paid you to do it).

Not necessarily. It all comes down to what the focus is with regard to securing the border.  If we ONLY focus on illegal immigration, then the argument that it is a law enforcement issue gains strength.  However, if we focus on other things - illegal drug trade, illicit arms trade, international terrorism, THEN the "law enforcement" argument goes bye-bye, as drugs, arms, and terrorism can all be declared clear and present dangers to national security, which puts the border right in the lap of our military to control.
