It's a weekly series on WW1.  I don't have a way to "fact check" it.
What I do like, it's answering alot of the questions I've been pondering, "why people did this, what were they thinking, what was the mood" that leads up to this war.

AND...  was WW2 basically an extension of WW1....  it appears so.

Great video, so accurate on facts. Austria-Hungary was actually in fear that Serbia could accept all of the terms in their ultimatum.

This is pretty well done.   Even my kids watch it, which is pretty good, because they don't care for "war movies" per say...

One thing stands out, people were a bit more "nationalist" in nature.  I think the lack of media choices, or the media basically limited to "official government sources" and local newspapers, really gave the advantage to those that wanted to shape public opinion.   ...which, would partially explain why some government officials would rather limit free speech on the internet, than compete with it.

I am just stunned at the loss of life, 10,000 this week, 15,000 that week, 50,000 taken prisoners, etc., the numbers are just staggering!!!   And the war hawks in government(s) thought nothing of just throwing another 100,000 into another battle, or sending them over some wintery mountain dressed in summer gear (thousands of men freezing to death).

It is little wonder, given the cavalier attitude of some leaders....  Men laid down they're arms and celebrated Christmas in 1914 together.   Or that sailors decided not to go-down-with-the-ship and would rather live to fight another day.

I keep asking myself if we Americans are better off without this strong nationalistic pride, or (as we are now), a nation that doesn't seem like it could ever be unified in such a way again (as they were).   I wonder if one of the missing elements is the lack of respect for authority today...?

Videos give me a fit because of my hearing and this screen on the new Mac laptop ain't the biggest, but if it is accurate, I have to ask exactly what it was about some crazy Serb offing the Big Cheese Ferdinand and his wife that we were willing to send hundreds of thousands to Europe to die.

I believe you are absolutely correct the French with the aid of the British, screwed over Germany and that gave rise to Hitler.

BTW, in my estimation we started down the path of Natonalism, imperialism, as well as socialism during the Unholy Civil War.

They have new hearing aid units that will stream right into your hearing aids now.  36" to 54" TV can plug right into your laptop also.  Think about it...

I can also answer my land line through my system from anywhere in the house.   I don't have to get up or stop what I am doing to answer the phone now, just press a button.

Neither. The results with one for the phone weren't really that satisfactory, then I lost the tension spring in the clip and just stopped using it. Never bought the one for the TV. Probably should, but I have my eye on a couple of pistols I've been wanting and I have put about 3 to 4 grand in my mouth for partials.

I have the Streamer Pro from Oticon.
I can stream from my PC, TV, B/T Cell phone, Landline phone or a clip on Microphone.   I only use the stream for my PC, cell phone and landline phone.  I do not use the TV or Microphone systems.

Indeed the Great War was a transformative event ranking w/Alexander's crushing of the Persians at Gaugemela, the fall of Imperial Rome and the Protestant Reformation! The impact still reverberates to this day. So what was it's catalyst?
In his War Dispatches to Rome, Julius Caesar continually referenced the ancient and eternal enmity between the Gauls and Saxons as the reason for his interminable difficulty in securing the northern border of the Roman Empire.
After the collapse of Rome, France emerged from Gaul and was led by the likes of Charlemagne, Martel and Napoleon down thru the centuries while Germania remained fractured and ineffectual for some 1400 years. Then a Hohenzollern Prince, Otto Von Bismarck' along w/a Great Captain; Helmuth Von Molkte' emerged to unite Germany.
Late in 1870, over six weeks time, Germany crushed France, forcing Paris to wave the white flag. The surrender and treaty was held at Versailles. Von Bismarck had all the chairs removed from the great Hall of Mirrors and the defeated Marshals of France were led in, preening and strutting, and made to stand. Then Von Bismarck led by his retainers carrying a desk and a single chair, entered. He sat and told the French, in fluent French, that the key provinces of Alsace and Lorraine were now annexed to Germany and that France would never set foot on German soil again.
Gallic pride never recovered but a watershed had been reached as Germany was then ascendant over France.

History was my worst subject ... ever.   Now, I have this insatiable interest in it.  This started with pre-WW2 Germany, because of a close friend - his mother was a teenager in Germany.  She absolutely loved Hitler - so one thing has lead backward to another, and what you're saying, much, much farther back, Caesar, Alexander... whew!

As far as I can tell, the stupid alliances (cemented by marriages...heh), between these countries has no real foundational purpose.  In fact, it would appear to be family squabbles, on a national scale, eventually leading to WW1.  Not much difference, on the surface, of 3-4 farmers fighting over water rights, where Farmer Fred put up his fence, and Farmer Joe moves it...   The populace are the children.

A very long history of infighting, conquering & being conquered, killing and claiming land & vice versa.  It is little wonder, pacifists rise out of these conflicts (All Quiet on the Western Front).   Assuming an individual is raised somewhere other than the Americas, their personal 'history' would be LOADED with hatreds of this group of people, or that race - which isn't really the way I was raised.  Obama seems to bring that racial tension with him, like it's in his DNA, but middle America is this sort of melting pot, where the hope of a new life & better future is the foundation for living.  Here, land ownership is "normal", a right - but, I wonder if the people in the Balkans actually claim ownership of anything?

Walter - I had to reread your post 4 times!

Ok, one of the other interesting things, and the weekly "The Great War" brought it out, WW1 was expected to last weeks or a few months - they would be home for Christmas.   But, with no real cause to fight for, was it any wonder the 1st Christmas was celebrated between the opposing forces?   Was there a collective objective between the Allied countries - other than conquer territory, destroy the Ottoman Empire, the Serbs & Turks stealing land from each other, Germany feeling invincible & France sucking Brittan into the war, which eventually brought the US in.  Standing out, in the most glaring fashion, the unresolved past conflicts - the opportunity to get even, take more territory, genocide, divide up the spoils, promises & back room deals...   Both fascinating and sickening at the same time.
