History might repeat itself...

QuoteThough the Soviet Union was committed by treaty to come to North Korea's defense, the Brezhnev government made clear it would not enter into war with the United States over a provocation from Pyongyang. Diplomatic communiqués released after the end of the Cold War reveal that Moscow was upset by the North Korean attack, which may have been egged on by promises of support from China, which was attempting to secure Pyongyang's loyalty in the bitterly divided Eastern Bloc. A week after the Pueblo was captured, Kim Il-sung demanded additional economic aid from Moscow—a request which was reciprocated in a bid to pay off the North Korean leader into deescalating tensions with the United States.

Although Pyongyang profited from playing one patron against the other, its attack on the Pueblo was probably primarily motivated by the failure of its assassination plot in South Korea. Anticipating possible attacks from South Korea or the United, it may have seen taking the Pueblo as a preemptive move in an imminent conflict, or as a means to gain leverage over Washington and sow dissension between the United States and South Korea.

I read through the article, sort of mildly interested in what happened to the USS Pueblo (it's still there, anchored off the coast of N. Korea as a trophy).   The Viet Nam war was getting hotter and hotter, and per NORKs, we were within their self-established 50 mile territorial waters, even though International agreements are 12 miles at the time.

The two paragraphs quoted are worth reading a couple of times - because I really wonder if we won't witness something similar, again to gain leverage.  What that would be, God only knows.   The NORKs are old pros at playing mortal enemies against eachother - and profiting quite nicely.  A President Trump may be a blessing in disguise, going straight to China to pressure them to turn up the heat on the NORKs, rather than just deal with them.   We shall see....

Like the beginning of the war, the Pueblo was just another mistake in a long line of mistakes, and by mistakes, I mean, being undermanned and unprotected/escorts and destroyers.
If we've learned anything from Norks, it's that they will always seize a grandstand opportunity to brag about.

Where it all began.
This is an account of the first American casualty/'s of the Korean war, and how it all began, with an undermanned force.

Task Force Smith. Lessons learned the hard way that should never again be repeated.
It's a bit long, but you can easily skim it and ignore authors notes. It's a great historical read, and ROK stands for South Republic of Korea army.

Well, here's an interesting bargaining blackmail chip the NORKs might be holding, Anthrax

https://nypost.com/2017/12/26/north-korea-soldier-who-defected-had-immunity-to-anthrax/

QuoteA North Korean soldier who defected to the South was found to have antibodies to anthrax — triggering concerns that the rogue regime has weaponized the deadly bacteria, according to reports Tuesday.

The man, who was either exposed to or vaccinated for anthrax, had developed immunity to the deadly disease before defecting, UPI reported, citing local Channel A.

A South Korean intelligence official who spoke on condition of anonymity did not say which of the four soldiers who fled the hermit kingdom this year had the antibodies in his system.

a.  they are blowing smoke, and have immunized just a handful of NORKs, but want us to THINK they're gonna hit us with it.
b.  they actually have enough to do some damage, and want us to know they're crazy enough to use it.
c.  They use it on Japan.  Message received, war has begun.

I think their biological weapons are not for war, but for blackmail.  How they use or don't use them, doesn't matter, blackmail is blackmail, a threat is a threat.... will China step up and "do what needs to be done?"

QuoteAccording to South Korea's Chosun Ilbo, U.S. recon satellites have photographed around 30 illegal transactions involving Chinese vessels selling oil to North Korea on the West Sea in October. The images allegedly showed large Chinese and North Korean ships transacting in oil in a part of the West Sea closer to China than South Korea. The satellite pictures even showed the names of the ships.

So much for embargos and the power of the United Nation's sanctions..

Proves my point about China and their lapdog, the rabid Chiuaua.
They have no intention and never have had in stopping his radical behavior.
