I was in the USN for 20 years; there have been several Marines who were rather influential in my life.

I recall one elderly Marine I was shooting with at the Wheeler AF rifle range.  He was one of the advisers in Vietnam who was doing a bit more than advising.  He and his friends were worried about how their leaders were going to react.  Then one day they got a message from JFK.  It said in part; "It has come to my attention that some of my advisers in Vietnam are fighting along side our Vietnamese allies.  I have one thing to say about this; don't miss."  He was happy to hear that message.
