« on: October 11, 2012, 05:08:02 AM »
Army legend Command Sergeant Major Basil Plumley

Fort Benning is mourning the loss of retired Command Sgt. Maj. Basil Plumley. Plumley, 92, died Wednesday morning at Columbus Hospice after he was recently diagnosed with colon cancer.

He was a veteran of the World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

During the Vietnam War, Plumley served as a sergeant major of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment. The unit's actions in 1965 during The Battle of Ia Drang were revisited in the book We Were Solders... and Young.

The book became a movie in 2002. We Were Soldiers, starred Mel Gibson; actor Sam Elliot portrayed CSM Plumley in the movie.

Plumley enlisted in the Army in 1942 and retired after 32 years of service.  He later worked at Martin Army Hospital on post before retiring after 15 years of service.

A little off topic, but six years ago today I lost a good friend in Afghanistan. His name was Isaiah Calloway. He was killed by a Taliban ambush. I miss him greatly. So  war is personal to me. May all the soldiers who've given their lives for our country rest in peace. And a big thank you to all the veterans for their service to our nation.

I currently have a family member and my best friend both serving in Afghanistan. I worry about them every day and think of them all the time.

War is hell. Anyone who glamorizes war and hopes for it is an idiot.
Skepticism, like chastity, should not be relinquished too readily.

I am so sorry for the loss of your friend, and I hope the other two come home safe and sound.
