Title: Abdication of Edward VIII

Would the UK have had a more limited role had Edward VIII remained king? I don't think he would have allied with Germany, but it's possible he would have sat out the war, much like Ireland did.

Quite possibly, he did disdain all the pomp and political power of the throne.
But more than likely may have had a worse outcome.
Germany had it's eye on the big prize, which encompassed everyone, I highly doubt world conquest would have stopped at UK' door.
