Title: Worst Game Ever, On Purpose
Post by: Solar on November 24, 2014, 11:39:47 AM

Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors: Gameplay: Desert Bus
Penn Jillette commented in his radio show that the overly realistic nature of the game was in response to Janet Reno's comments in support of the moral panic about violent video games at the time (see Video game controversies). He also stated that there would have been a prize for the person or group to get the highest score in the game, also substantiated by the various "Desert Bus" contest materials prepared for the release of the game. Penn said that the prize "was going to be, you got to go on Desert Bus from Tucson to Vegas with showgirls and a live band and just the most partying bus ever. You got to Vegas, we're going to put you up at the Rio, big thing, and then, you know, big shows." Some have played the game using a tool-assisted emulator, managing to obtain 99 points, the maximum the game allows. A run of this length would have taken over 33 days to complete in real time.http://desertbus-game.org/ (http://desertbus-game.org/)

I can't even run it because my Java security settings block it.

Yeah, I got the same message, but I'm sure you aren't missing anything, I mean after all, there's nothing but empty desert the entire 8 hrs of pure monotonous driving of a bus that pulls to one side continuously and if you hit a cactus, you start over.
Yeah, that sounds like a lot of fun.

Gee, I hate that I'm missing out on something that cool! Eight hours of driving a bus that needs a front-end alignment, and watch out for the cacti. Man, that's deep.  :tounge:

I think that's exactly what they were going for. A way for parents to have a day of peace.

Sounds emotionlessly dull.  I don't get the 45-mph thing...

That's the point, it's meant to be painfully boring, like watching paint dry, knowing fulll well going in, it's nondrying paint.

Who in their right mind would drive a bus across the desert at 45 mph constantly having to correct it's path?
For the same reason, who is stupid enough to play a game for hours on end with no reward, other than the satisfaction they completed it?

Hmm, now that I think about it, this is a great tool for observing mental illness.

Just replayed one of the best games ever; Uncharted 3 (the final 3/5th's take-place in Syria and Yemen, ironically).  The studio handled the alone-in-the-desert sequence by timed cutscenes, so no matter which direction you chose, the story kept flowing.

Uncharted 3? Never heard of it. Who does the engine on it?

Naughty Dog Studios built their own engine specifically for Uncharted 3... originally using Havok for 1 and 2.  Here, they used Havok to create the " Destruction engine using Havok physics ".  Though now it's called Naughty Dog 3.1.

The Uncharted series is one of the most beautiful, heart-touching, intelligently action-packed franchises of all time.  Both 2 and 3 won Game Of The Year awards from the plethora of industry & fan sites.  Naughty Dog also nabbed 2013 Game of The Year with The Last Of Us, returning to the Havok engine.

PC First Person, single player?

Yep, first-person puzzler/shooter, single player... for PS3 console, which I sense you're not fond of.  -But worth picking-up a used console just for those 4 titles alone.

Yeah, hate the controllers with a passion. I did pick up the interface for mouse/keyboard for X-Box, but have yet to hook it up.
So I take it they haven't released the PC version as of yet?

They're available on PC...

I forgot to mention it.  Just type 'pc-version of uncharted' in your search-engine...  They may even be free now.

Get set for the ultimate...

Yes, it's a free for download for online gaming, but I can't download stuff that big.
I'll look for it at Amazon.
