Anyone Playing Any Good FPS Single Player Games?

ST just bought me Rage, I blew through it in a day, could have been sooner, had it not been for the lack of a compass, I could have finished it in about 4 hours.
The game looked really good, but as for repeat play, it's lacking depth.
The story line is interesting, a meteor hits Earth, we had prepared for the event by building Arks and sent them out with humans in cryogenic sealed pods.
Th humans were an nanobot advanced adaption, but this never comes out in the game except when you are injured, it gives you one more chance at life.

I guess the build up was too much, and the game never rose to the challenge.
It probably makes a good online game, but I don't do online playing with a satellite connection.

Anyway, after one play through, I popped back in Borderlands, been playing it for more than a year pretty much daily.

So, do you have any good First Person Shooter (FPS) games you would recommend?
I loved Quake, Doom, stuff like that.

The one that started it all...

Believe it or not, I still play it now and then, though I have to load a DOS simulator to get it to work.

When I bought the "latest" version of Quake back in '05 or '06, I didn't much care for it, but the bonus disk in the package was "Return to Castle Wolfenstein," which was MORE than worth what I paid for Quake. It's kinda dated now, but still a hoot. There's a multi-player version too, which is mega-cool if you're into that sort of thing. I think it's called "Enemy Territory."

I liked Wolfenstein, it was a lot like Doom in many ways, but a better story line.
Quake III was nothing compared to the original, Q3 was the end, they killed it when they made it mostly an online multiplayer game.
This should be a lesson to the game makers, multiplayer kills more than half your buying public.
Not to mention the fact that people continue to create maps for the game, in turn killing any interest for a sequel.

In other news, we can finally shoot Mario Bros. in the head and bury that piece of shit, it lost nearly a half a billion in it's last endeavor.
Always thought that was the dumbest game ever, but the Romper Room kids grew tired of Romper Stompers as well, so trying to make young adults see the appeal of walking around on inverted fried chicken buckets should be a lesson in marketing, kids eventually grow up.

"Wolfenstein 3D" story line: kill everybody, absolutely everybody you encounter while you listen to rinky-dink MIDI music..

"Doom" story line: kill everybody, absolutely everybody you encounter, while you listen to rudimentary 16-bit music.

"Quake" story line: kill everybody, absolutely everybody you encounter while you listen to Nine Inch Nails in surround stereo.

Some things never change, my friend.  :tounge: :tounge: :tounge:

Actually, I've always been taken with the Myst series, and titles that offer that sort of experience. There was a time when I was playing a flight simulator every single night -- for a long time it was "European Air War" -- but that sort of thing is hard to come by these days. Hell, EAW was written for Windows 98, and was almost impossible to get to run on any other OS. EAW was a true first person shooter, and no one I know of has written a true FPS for airplanes since then.

These days, it's puzzle games pretty much. I like the mind challenge. Yeah, I've got COD-MW3 and Battlefield 3, and I like the livin' shit out of 'em. But I don't play 'em all that much. The newer FPS games are more intense than I like. Too many keys to master, too much reliance on others, too much noise! (I am forever turning those games down.)

As always, just my humble opinion...  :tounge: :tounge: :tounge:

ST loves those puzzle, you should swap game names, she goes through about two a week.
But I agree about the noise, I play Borderlands with the sound off, I've heard it enough, that my mind plats the sound as I go along.

And there's another one I'd recommend wholeheartedly, one that stands out as ... different, and FUNNY!

"Armed and Dangerous" was put out by the LucasFilms group years ago. If you haven't seen it, it's a FPS played by a member of a three-  or four-person "crew." Actually, I should enclose the word "person" because one of the primary characters is mechanical.

The first few times through, it was funny as hell, and it had all the ass-kicking of the very best FPS games. I particularly admired the sniper rifle weapon which enables you to literally kill from an unlimited distance.  What a gun! If you can see it, you can kill it, with one shot!

But defending the towns from the pre-installed shooting pods.... WOW!!!

Once the story line played out, the game started to lag a bit. But it's still fun.

I loved that game!
I was going to recommend another very similar, but can't remember the name, funny as hell also.

Next month I go to Falcon Northwest with a check for a new laptop.  It's going to have Doom I and II installed on it first.

Then the Serious Sam games.

Then Quake 1.  And the add-on packs with the tenebrae mod.

And finally the Painkiller series.

Because my iPad3 is for my Baldur's Gate game.
