I love morning like this.  18º out ice on the trees for the over night due.  Sun just starting to coming up over the Blue mountain with the sky full of color in the back ground.   Not a cloud in the sky on this side of the Blues.  The air smell so clean with a bite to it.  We should hit 25º today with full sun.

I lived in CO one winter and in the early spring we had an unexpected ice storm go through during the night.  When I got up and looked out, it was magical.  Even the tiniest twig was encased in ice. Looked like something out of a fairytale book.

We get this about 4 time a year.  As we live about the Columbia river.  Most of the time the sun will do it job by noon.  But some weeks we don't get much sun and it can build up for a week or so.   This time a year we go through about 50 lbs. of bird seed a month.

They're calling for single digits in my area, while others say teens, either way, it's about to get cold again.

Went into town Monday at 5:A.M.   The wind was coming from the South at about 6mph.  Got home at about 3:P.M. and the wind was from the North at 20 to 25mph.   You could feel it coming big time.   It should start warming up to around a nice 35º about Friday.

-3 degrees, actual, and roughly -19 degrees of wind chill. My wife reported she lost roughly 10 pounds of air pressure in all four tires of her car, in an eight-hour period. (Anyone else see that phenomenon?)

Yep had it happen about 20 years ago in by beat up old car, thought it odd, even questioned if someone let the air out, but realized it helped when I went into town to get supplies while driving through snow, I didn't need chains.
However, when I got there, they magically re-inflated.

I truly hate that kind of cold! Snow is like pavement, everything you need is either sealed in the shop you can't access due to the rock wall of snow, or it's somewhere near that tree you leaned it under and takes a pick to get it out.
The one upside, you don't have to walk far to get snow to boil on the woodstove, because the pipes are frozen solid.

Happens every winter to every car/truck. We just pay more attention to the phenomenon now because our "smart" vehicles keep tabs on tire pressure, a thing that few drivers bother to do this time of year, if it involves squatting in the blowing snow with a tire gauge. Simple stuff, really -- the air in the tires shrinks with the cold a lot more than the tires themselves do, so the pressure goes down.

Of course, as you drive the vehicle, the tires flex and gather heat from friction, even in cold weather, and if you travel very far at all, the pressure comes back up.

Next time you think of it on a really cold day, after you've driven 50 miles or so at freeway speeds, stop and reach down and put your hand on any tire on your vehicle. It'll be warm. While you're at it, check the tire pressure. It'll be normal, or nearly so.

As for the stats here, in west-central Ohio, down to -9 last night, with a blistering high of 11 today. Wind chills in the -25 range, enough for the USWS to issue warnings. Time to let the kitchen faucet trickle at night!

We're having some weird weather. We should be in the low 20s this time of year, yet I woke at 4:00 am to 65 degrees.

They say we are supposed to get rain over the next few days with snow levels at 8000' which is ridiculously high., but welcome nonetheless.

Yep looks like a Pineapple Express hit us over the weekend.  54º today with rain off and on for the next 5 days.  You would think it was Spring.  This keeps going and trees will start trees budding out.

Same here, grass is so tall, it's laying down nearly a foot long, but it's way to wet to mow.
Sounds like we're getting the same storm.

Damn, even with that Pineapple Express going through and hitting your area.  The winds were no help and the rains came later from the sounds of it.

Forty homes were destroyed in a wind-driven wildfire that burned nearly 11 square miles and forced the evacuation of about 150 people in two small California towns at the eastern base of the Sierra Nevada, officials said Saturday.
