Solar and I have had several trail cameras around the property and over the years have gotten some awesome pictures and videos. Recently we lost the camera at the bottom of the property. So we decided to check out some other cameras to replace it. We have always had Stealth trail cameras but decided to try out a Browning Strike Force XR. The difference is amazing. The range and the quality are above and beyond what we are used to. (If you want to know what happened to the old camera ask Solar.)

Long story short, I drove over the old camera with my 25 ton bull dozer. Cheap ass camera, couldn't take a little pounding like an old Timex could. :blush:

We save a lot of them, I'm certain she'll post some for you. Had a flock of turkeys wandering around in circles lost, she didn't want to save that, but I got a nice shot of a bear I use as my screen saver, just wish I'd had this camera at the time.

First pic appears to be mom and baby, second pic appears to show three younguns.
No matter how you slice it, they'll be around until food gets scarce, hopefully they'll start with coyote. The Fox in the earlier segment will probably be one of their first targets considering how close they are.
Our neighbor just lost her pet goat to this same cat. It's sad, but they have no dog, just a shitty small pen to keep it in that it couldn't escape from, but a lion could easily clear, in other words, BAIT!

I live in a different world. I see an occasional possum or fox. I always worry about them as my street is one of the busiest thoroughfares in the Borough. I'd hate for them to become street pizza.
Usually, the only "animals" I need to be wary of are the 2-legged "critters" that think old white ladies are fair game for robbery or rape.

This one that took the lion shots was one of the best you could buy at the time for a few hundred bucks, about 5 years ago, the others were in the thousands of dollars for good video but the price has dropped considerably.

Thank you, Solar. Tom has been talking about upgrading our system. I will pass your link to him. The police know that we have cameras all around our house. They have banged on our door about 5 times, asking if they could copy certain time frames from our system. They bring memory sticks and thoughtfully sit and chit chat while it is downloading. Very nice young men. One of them recommended we upgrade. That is why Tom is seriously thinking about it.

Though this is the first time I've caught a Bobcat/Lynx on camera, there's always been one living on the property or near by. About 20 years ago I had one that used to start talking as it would come up the mountain and passing my bedroom window 50' away.
It would start a few hundred feet down the mountain, about 3:00 am calling out with a loud ass "ROWWWRRR...ROWWWRRR.....ROWWWRRR" sounded like a young lion, and really loud. He'd do this as a alert for my dogs, "Don't Fuck With Me, I' Coming Through"! Lasted all of about 3 minutes nearly every night.
This went on for three years? Usually early Spring through mid summer, I just decided this was my new alarm clock until it ended and never happened again.
My real concern is to see one during the mid day on the lower road to the creek. They're a nocturnal animal, and the only time you see nocturnal animals during the day, is when there is a problem, or they have a disease, such as rabies.
I'll have to call the County animal control to be certain, though this one looks fine on video, something isn't right I'm sure, but I hope it's OK.

I called animal control and they told me it's not unusual for August because hit was probably thirsty. It had just left the creek, or headed to my other creek because it was a hot muggy day.
I feel better now, I was concerned, because I've seen coyote suffering rabies. They are literally nuts when in full blown rabies, this one in particular was attacking imaginary entities, it was really surreal.

It's hard to tell because of the infrared shot, but it could be a cinnamon color. It does look like mommy and baby. These two are new to the area so ot looks like we're going to hear a lot about bear problems next year.
We also have more lions than normal, which is good, we have way too many deer.

The neighbor down the road had more than 60, his wife was feeding the strays, problem was, not a one was spayed, by the 2nd year, her husband called animal control.

Yes, the gust is what knocked the tree from the ground and left it precariously leaning on another tree, so I had to push it over to be safe, it was only 35 years old and about 100' tall which is why it didn't develop much of a tap root.
The Fox was a bit surprised to see it down as well. :biggrin:

I used to have my flat lander friends come up to camp. I have a bunch of those night eye thumb tacks, they reflect light a mile away, so I'd stick a bunch in the trees, some green, some white, even a couple of red ones.
I'd tell them if they got for a walk, be sure to take a flashlight to scare away the predators. They'd get about 200' from camp and come screaming back into camp telling exaggerated stories about being chased by bears and lions and even possible demons.

The story behind the pic above is my neighbors land. He's a really great guy, he's been busting his ass trying to clean up the land he bought next to mine.
the previous owner only came up 15 times in the last 30 years did nothing to help the land, just let it get heavily overgrown with brush and dead trees.
anyway, Alex came up and started in again like he has every weekend for the last two years, busting his ass to clear the fire danger, problem is, he tried to burn it all in place instead of dragging it into a clearing.
The result was old stumps in the ground, several of them, they caught fire but he didn't know it. I wasn't concerned because we still had a lot of snow and rain was on its way.
But Toy went for a walk and saw the flames coming off another stump about 20' from the actual burn, the roots had burned underground and into the roots of the other stump which was full of resin/sap.
Anyway, let this be a lesson for anyone burning, anywhere, you never know whats underground.
We sent him the pic and he was in a panic, he drove about 80 miles in the night to get here. I used my tractor, scooped a bunch of snow and buried them, at least to keep them from spreading above ground.
They're still burning, about 5 of them and probably will for several days.
But I'm not concerned, we just had an inch of rain and it's supposed to rain everyday for the next two weeks solid. Global warming my ass! :biggrin:

I love this one! Since the video can't be expanded, he has what looks to be a vole in his mouth. We don't have gophers this high up, but voles are just as bad.

Our one cat, Rain, was totally freaked out this morning, didn't even come for breakfast, sh looked at me and ran. This is not like her, since we've been pulling in their food at night because coons, Fox and skunks love the free meal.
So normally she comes running when you pop the lid on a can, happy as hell and hungry. I thought it odd, till I pulled the chips and saw the video, it all made sense.
I called Toy and she got mad because I wanted her to see what I had. :lol:

We've seen this little guy several times, assumed it was a baby opossum, then I thought it was a muskrat, but now we have no idea what it is, the eyes aren't opossum, it ain't a bear or a lion. :lol:
What does it look like to you? For size, it appears to be around 7 to 10 lbs, nose to tail, 9", maybe, at best?
I'm jealous. The trail cam on our 65 acre wooded place here in Michigan only photographs wild turkeys and an occasional doe. By the way, turkeys are so thick they're becoming a nuisance. They poop all over the place. We absolutely love watching the flocks nest every evening in our trees but from now on, we're gonna shoot them away from the house. They're so used to us, they think they're part of the family!

I know what you mean. My neighbor had his 30 acres of Yellow pine die off from bark beetles, leaving behind spindly tall chaparral. The turkeys love it, there must be 50 or more every night nesting, and yes, making a mess, you can't walk through there.
All we ever see of turkeys is a pack of 12 or so passing through, probably going back to his place to take a dump. :lol:

On another note. The wife and I went down to the camp, she wanted to clear some small dead trees, grabbed the chainsaw and headed up the bank.
I saw here wrestling a 30' tall dead Doug Fir, whipping it back and forth, I said honey, that'll snap and hit you, she stopped.
I turned and started to walk away, when I heard her scream. Yep, she saw a smaller dead Fir, gave it a few back and forth shoves when it snapped off in her hands, she went down the bank and broke her wrist.
Got her in the RZR, back to the house and off to emergency, sure enough, snapped at the wrist. She'll be doing surgery next week.
I had to wear a damned mask! Thought I'd get through this bull shit without ever having to wear one. I was wrong! :lol:

I had lowered the water level by 6' a couple of months ago hoping the rains would flush the debris from the bottom.
Well, we never got our deluge, and the trout appeared in good numbers.
After the Crane flew off, there were only two trout left, but within a few days more began arriving.
I'll have to dam up the creek so the little bastard can't fish out the rest. :angry:

About the new video? We had no clue there was more than two squirtels living down there.
We assumed there was a pair, but never together. Even the ducks and Robins use the area separately, as if they all watch a clock to know when it's their turn, but to see a herd of squirtels running around was a total shock.
All done within a one hour window.

Yes, we've probably gone through 15 cameras over the years, differing brands, and the last 4 brands we bought as a test including Browning top of the line, all went back but one.
No glow infrared. Animals never even know it's there, and people won't know it caught them because no red light or flash.
We hung onto this one, the Meidase model #2. This camera is the most sensitive, has the best night shots and clearest video, and when I say sensitive, expect 30 or more videos to be false, the sun triggers it every minute between 1:00 Pm and 3:00 Pm continuously, but you can skip through them quickly.
I'll be buying about 4 more to replace some of the other cameras, and we paid a lot for them, some over $400.0 a piece.
The Meidase model #2 is dirt cheap comparatively, I think I paid $50, and it is worth it, just be sure and buy lithium disposable and a rechargeable 12V battery pack plug in, you'll get more than 5 of months uninterrupted use.
Otherwise you'll be replacing batteries monthly, gets expensive
Sadly, it's made in China, but to get a comparatively good American made cameras, expect to pay over $500.0.
I'll be trying the Meidase#3 next, 100' reach is important. Here's the only link I can find, maybe you can buy direct from another supplier?

There are cell related cameras, but they require their own cell number. Some are wifi/bluetooth, but too expensive for what you get in quality, and you need to be close to the unit to transfer data.
Some even take an image 24/7, every minute, or hour, 4 hrs, or whatever you like, great for seasonal change, sunsets, sunrises etc. These are very inexpensive, around $30.0...
I'll probably be getting a couple of these for the creek rise in the winter months.
But for quality shots, this is the best we've found so far. I just can't justify spending a grand for something a bear might destroy or someone stealing it.
Not to mention, most fail in some manner within 5 years. But with tech constantly changing, why waste your money on an expensive camera?

I think it's a bear and lion trail, too rugged for deer, they like the easy stuff. And exactly why I never go there, I'll set it and forget it.

Yep, he has no fear in the forest, but then, that's not a good thing, I've lost a few to the forest like that.
He's about a mile from the house by road, and about a quarter mile in a straight line, but he likes to nap down there, so he may make the 5 year mark if he's lucky. Great mouser, he'll be missed.

Cool! I might add, if you plan on having it up months at a time, buying an extra 12v/DC battery pack that plugs in.
We get about 5 months to a charge, better to recharge at 3 months or the reach of the sensor diminishes considerably.
Much cheaper than replacing lithium batteries.

Could very well be. Having my cataract removed and I don't get my new glasses for 2 more weeks, all colors look bright so thing are not very vivid yet. I almost need to use sun glasses in the house sometimes.

I even checked out Nutria, a fuckin rat, but I don't think they can deal with the cold, being from South Africa.
In the 30 years plus I've lived here, never seen anything like it, that's why I think it might be someone's escaped pet.
I'm waiting on fish and game to call, I called them yesterday, so they may call on Monday.
If it doesn't belong, I want it gone, the eco system here is quite fragile and an introduced specie could destroy the balance in no time at all.

The gate opener went out a couple of years ago, so the 20' gate was always open, until we got a new one the other day.
I have a video camera set on the gate as well, so here Hi comes home about 3:00am, he walks up to the gate, stands there as if "How do I get in"?
Tries sticking his head through, all the while about 50' behind him is a Mt Lion watching intently, you could tell it was by its eyes, broad set and large with a slow blink, kept watching him the entire time, as Hi looks back as if to say, "Bite Me, you can't get me."
I have a feeling they know one another, which is why the lion never made a move, Hi is just too damn quick and the lion knows it, so why waste energy.
The next video shows Hi giving up on the gate and walking off as if he owns the damn forest.
I have no idea why he didn't just walk through, the bars are more than wide enough for the turd to walk through, I guess it shocked him that we locked him out. :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Local fish and game called me back after watching the video and said he was dumbfounded as well. :lol:

Well.... I've had a little experience in this field... and here's what helped me get over the hurdle of "3 pages in". Write an outline to yourself. Something that no one else needs to see (if you're bothered by that sort of thing) but a simple "In Chapter One, I will write about 'THIS'. In Chapter Two, I will write about 'THAT'... " and so on. I did that with my first book, ended up with a 27 chapter outline, with every chapter accounted for, and then it just flowed after that.
I hope you go for it.

Excellent advice.
But for me, setting out parameters usually interferes with the flow. My plan was to do a kinda humorous approach, where each incident tied into the next.
Be it sliding down the mountain into the creek in a dozer, to laying water lines, these events all lead to the next, including the worst case of poison oak in the history of mankind, in the middle of winter with no water.
This went on for years, one after another. :biggrin:
I wish I could explain it better, but suffice it to say, buying raw land, finding a water source, creating electricity to building a home, all toed together out of necessity.
I still haven't finished the house yet. :blush:

based on Our scale that's nothing, but for him, it was nearly half his life. I'm sure they all had the best of intentions, but he never really bonded with anyone.
It looks like he'll be Toy's dog, he really likes her, now if we can just get the rest of the critters to warm up to him.
No training to speak of, never been in a house before, no manners whatsoever, so I have a busy week ahead, teaching him the basics, like "Sit, Come, stay and No". :rolleyes:
He really upset the routine around here, big clod with ZERO etiquette. :biggrin:

Holy cow, I would have a heart attack if I ever saw that bear. All we have here are coyotes and occasional rattlesnakes. I have always been afraid of snakes, any kind of snake.

He lives very close, maybe on our land, but there's so much of it that isn't accessible, anyway, not at my age.
In the past I covered nearly all of it, a few caves, mostly cliffside, so there's no telling where he beds down on hot days, no doubt down along the creek someplace.
I do remember one hibernating across my creek in a cave, but since it got flooded one year, none have attempted in since.
I love these guys, they never give us any trouble, but then, we don't leave food accessible. :biggrin:

Most wouldn't notice the differences, but the bear isn't like the ones we normally have in our area, most likely he's from South of Grizzly Flats, probably traveled 25 miles or better to get here.
He couldn't move South because there just isn't enough food or water in that direction.

Until the fire is out, it'll stay here, which doesn't bode well for competition.
I'm against feeding forest critters, we know how damaging that can be by observing inner city shit holes.
But by no fault of their own, they are competing for food. So I'm now subsidizing some of their diet with apples and grapes, not much, just enough so they don't starve.
Cameras should show an increase in activity down by the creek.

Personally, I'm ecstatic about this.
Back story. Long time neighbor had his brother living on the property in our area, good and quiet, usually.
Well, the owner got run over in a parking lot 5 years back, crippled, couldn't walk so he never came up to see the property and check on his loser brother.
Time went by and his loser brother let his druggie daughter move in last Spring, she started bringing her druggie buddies to stay there, she wanted to grow weed.
They got busted at harvest time. Sheriff condemned the property mostly due to the fact she had accumulated two 12' high piles of household garbage.
We've never had a raven problem till she showed up. In one summer we had around 30 raven invade the area, all because this bitch was throwing out fast food crap instead of bagging it up.
Long story short, she's gone, the property is up for sale. But a pair of ravens stuck around, it was pretty obvious they planned on raising a family here.
Well, thanks to our beautiful fox, we probably won't see any ravens for a long time. :thumbsup: :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
So our male cat "Hi" is fixed. Do neutered males still spray to mark territory? We have never seen him do this inside or outside before.

The body may have rigor mortis considering we saw the same kill near a fox on another camera. It appears that they had moved it for later consumption.
The closest thing it comes to in the forest, is a skunk, but it doesn't have any white on it.

No ground hogs and Marmots, though Marmots live at the highest peaks 11,000', generally hibernate in the winter.
Good guess though.
We're still puzzled as to what it was. The only thing around that size would be a skunk, but we never did see any white whatsoever in any of the videos of their kill, just a black body.

In the video, Lux, our latest Shepard is laying by the gate waiting for us to get home, when a flock of turkeys wander through.
He just lays there, could care less, after all, to him, they didn't come through the gate, so they must belong.
In the very next video moments later, UPS pulls up and he goes into guard dog mode, hair on end, ears down and barking like a wild dog.
He was certain our

The squirrel on the other hand got in an argument with a raven over the walnuts I gave him yesterday, quite funny, he was lunging at the bird and the raven was acting sneaky by sidling up to the nuts, acting like "what nuts"?

I asked Toy to post this just to show the tranquility down at our creek/campsite. The pile of trees is only a fraction of the ones my neighbor cut up, I burned a 5' stack 20' across just a few days ago and directly behind the camera is another pile 12' deep and 6' high pile of 30' trees.
I ran an ad for free firewood, two called and one showed up today, but he doesn't think his 4X4 can get out of the canyon.
I'm even willing to skid all of it out with my D7, but people want everything already split.
Screw that, if I did that, I'd sell it, I just want it all gone.
Nature sure changes up plans, but it's good she did it now, before I built a cabin.

I just realized the images of the snowfall are missing, that's why all the trees are down and why I had so much clean up to do.
It was a wet and devastating storm for the forest, but nature was just culling the weak so the healthy could flourish.
All in all, I probably wound up with 75 cords of wood in total, and nearly half of that is inaccessible down in the canyon.

They are hard to see, but I kid you not, they are in the millions.
We usually see this activity in mid winter when the sun warms their burrow, usually a rotted out stump.
I've witnessed many a time where the ground appears to be moving, at least 50' across, but it's all lady bugs getting ready for flight.

Thing is, she is too damn fat for the hawk to carry. What should be a 12 to 15 Lb dog, is well over 20 lbs.

The fact that the lion attacked her with her dog present says a lot.
She was possibly on her period and it smelled blood, thinking she was already wounded, or old as the lady said and saw an easy target.
Either way, she put her dog and herself at risk. I make toy carry bear spray and an air horn, she hates carrying a gun, says it's too burdensome.
But with two Shepards with her at all times, the odds of being attacked are greatly reduced.
She also carries a walkie talkie and I can be there at a moments notice.
My prayers go out to the dog, not this idiot chick that put her dog in harms way. Talk about being ill prepared. :glare:

The bats up here are tiny little things, I could hide one in my closed hand, have no weight and only about a 3" wingspan and two inches long.
This thing is about 10 times their size. I suspect it is from Mexico, but without a clearer image, we'll never really know.

It's possible he lives down there, just above the creek, there is a natural cave for it to hibernate in during the winter months.
About 30 years back a momma lion raised her cubs there. So I wouldn't be surprised if other predators use it as well.

I just came up from the creek, quite a climb for a 25 ton loader and it was running fine, but the exhaust manifold was hotter than Hell.
Well, I kept seeing smoke blowing out the front and realized it wasn't oil or diesel, so I stopped, looked on the left and saw a bunch of twigs and leaves smoking, so I crossed over to the other and used the only water available.
Mine, so I hosed it down, put out the coals. To be honest, I was slightly panicked because I left the fire extinguisher at the top when I was cleaning it out, so I was relieved to see it wasn't really bad, just a bunch of twigs and leaves.
I'd had it do this in the past and the fire had dropped below the engine where a lot of oil soaked sticks, leaves and God knows what else is down there, and no, there's really no way to clean it out without removing 1000+ lb plates to access it.

That's why I pulled up to where I did, no trees above.
Luckily, the fires are about 10 miles to the South West, and the Yosemite fire is another ten+ beyond that.
Also, they are at a much lower elevation and would have to cross several rivers.

Nah, they never bother us. Almost 35 years now, and I've never had a single issue with the wildlife, and that's been after dozens of fires..
Though I may have to start feeding them, something I've always been against, but these fires are our fault, not theirs. So, just some extra grub to help them on their journey.

Coat? Yeah, but it's not really noticeable, the hair is thinner and allows heat to escape in the summer.
They rub up against tree bark and walk through heavy brush like manzanita to get rid of their winter coat, nearly the moment they come out of hibernation.
That's why you seldom see really heavy coated bears in the wild on video.

Last video, last deer. Looks like something is wrong, large growth on the side of it's head.
Just a guess, but it looks like a thorn broke off in its cheek and got infected.
Possibly from an old fruit tree regressing to its earlier ancestor. The thorns can get as long as 3", and their are a lot of old fruit trees up here planted by Ca early settlers.
And the fruit is as hard as an avocado pit, but the deer and bears love them, especially when they ferment..
They get drunk and stumble about.
So to follow up the fawn with the lump on its face.... we have a one eyed bear. He is a big one for sure.

Yah, there are tons of rescue services in the county, all volunteer, and all well funded.
I'm sure if it gets picked up, the vets will do everything possible to heal it.
If not, they'll euthanize it and the meat will go to the larger predators for feed.

With insects in decline, and yes, this is the first year in memory, we've gone without pests, no mosquitoes, flies hardly visible, etc.
So I've taken to offsetting their diets with apples and nuts since grub are an important part of these critters diets.
I'll throw out meat if it ever goes on sale.
This goes against what I believe, that you never interfere with wildlife, but with so many fires surrounding us, the animals lost their refuge/habitat and are in essence starving, as noted in the bear and raccoon losing an eye, they're fighting for their very existence!

We caught him on camera in the middle of winter. He had been severely injured, he'd been coming regularly, but that was the last time we saw him as he dragged his leg slowly to what we were certain was his end.
But here he is, still getting along. We never posted the other video because, it was too heart wrenching to watch him struggle across the creek.
I am soooo glad he made it, especially considering all the predators that have passed through in the interim.

Last night the bear came through and tipped over our rendering pot, or rather 40 person stew pot, weighs around 75 lbs.
The one that did it was a huge bear, so the one that came by today was probably its cub.
We had been storing dog food under it for the injured opossum.
You can see it sitting on the deck because this morning I tipped back up on the deck and stuck the rest of the food under it.
We'd wondered why the other bear hadn't finished it off, and now we know why, it sent the baby in for the rest. :smile:

ONE time, when I was ALOT younger, A friend of mine and I went camping out at this farm that had alot of wild land on it and there had been several sitings of a cougar which was suspected of killing a calf. We actually saw it once for just a moment before it slinked into the grass. That night we both slept with knives on us :biggrin: but there was no further contact.
With catnip they say it has a different affect whether the cat sniffs it or eats it. Like one makes it more wild while the other puts it to sleep or something like that. Different cats do different things with nip. But ya, with a cougar maybe thats a bad idea 😁

If this occurs, we could easily lose 100 sq miles in days right up to my property and beyond, dry, with a lack of resources thanks to the left.
I woke to smoke around 2:00 am, and it's really smoky outside as I type, literally blotting out the sun.
This fire is going to drive tens of thousands of animals our way as they escape to the South, but will be forced to stay here due to lack of food from the burn in the Caldor fire.
In other words, they'll be staying all Winter long because the Mosquito fire is burning to the N/E into the Tahoe National forest.
This leaves about a 20 by 15 mile wide buffer zone for them to refuge. This is not a big area considering the amount refugees from previous fires.
Yes, I will be feeding them as they pass through.
In the fires way is a major power transmission line running the Ralston ridge parallel to the Rubicon canyon river.
Ca is already cutting power, and the loss of this transmission line will insure tens of thousand s will go without power in the Sacto valley.

I plan on packing the 12gauge with me on the dozer, and if things are out of control, I'll jump in the new backhoe I bought and plow my way out. (didn't get insurance on it yet, but my 4x4 is fully insured)
Backhoe has air-conditioning and filtered air, so I should be fine.

Actually things just started looking up a bit, and it's all about the timing of the ocean breeze that's supposed to kick in.
If things go well, we may see the fire pushed towards Tahoe. This is a good thing, because we had the King fire a few or more years back that made an South to North East run towards Tahoe, leaving a 7 mile wide swath, 30 miles long burn.
There isn't much fuel to burn and this fire could run smack dab into it.

We get updates every 24 hrs. They made the wife feel better, but not me because no one knows what the wind will do.
If we get wind out of the east or North, the fire will be at my door in 10 minutes.
Entering Fall means N/E winds, rain probably won't come for weeks, maybe as late as Nov.
I knew the risks when I moved to the forest, but like driving in traffic, you never know when you'll meet an idiot.

Nope, not until the rains come. They've done an amazing job of getting a handle on the fire, cutting lines along my side, but the N/E side heading towards Tahoe is a real problem area, where hand crews can't get into safely.
Canyons and loose boulders on literal cliff sides makes it a deadly place to be. This area is about 18 miles for Tahoe.
This is all my old patrol area when I was law enforcement for USFS, I can testify, it's no mans land, very desolate and full of brush. They're trying to draw a line above the ridges, but it may be a futile effort in places and the fire will most likely jump up ahead of them after sneaking up the canyons and running the ridges.
But further up country it kinda levels out, where it will be within about 12 miles or less as the crow flies to Tahoe.
This fire, barring rain, will go well into November.

We went from 100 plus degree days, to fuckin looking at snow on the peaks of the sierra. Rain may start tonight and carry on through Wednesday, with a possible accumulation of 2" of rain.
The fire threatened our Sequoia, the further most grove in the West, thousands of years old grove about 15 miles West of Tahoe.
I just hope the rains come in slow and not downpour over burned areas creating rockslides and endangering lives of those on the fire.
Anyway, I'll make a prediction for the West, we're in for a nut biting cold winter. These really hurt because the West doesn't get below zero temps very often, it's been 30 years since the last one came through, and with our steep mountain roads, for some who can't get out, could be life threatening.

Yep, Russia has a Ng fire that's been burning for decades as well, that shit is amazing!
The upside to roots burning, is they eventually run out of fuel, unlike coal, which can run for miles.
The downside to roots burning out, is they leave the thin crust above. Looks normal till you ride a horse on it, or just go walking and bust a leg in it.
I was mopping up a fire above this one, went out the next day to drown the roots with a tanker truck, drug the hose out about 100'. Never even saw it, a burned out stump, stepped in the middle of it, hot coals wrapped my leg, and of course, my fire proof pants slid right up my leg to my nuts.
Luckily my partner was thinking quick and pulled me up, because seconds longer would have cooked my leg.
Oh, and I won't be venturing to the burn, because that will be some very unstable ground, even roads collapse, so nowhere is safe.

Exactly what I planned on using it for, and it does everything I ask of it and more.
Just finished rebuilding the neighbors road after 20 years of neglect, from 3' trenches off the crown, to cutting new drainages, but that was mostly my Massey's job, since it has a hydraulic tilt top box scrapper.
I was able to clear out all the limbs as well as push over trees that had grown out in the road over the years.
She now has a 1000' by 50' landing strip of a road, crowned nicely and ready for a nasty winter.

Absolutely! The only thing that takes getting used to, is the top heaviness due to the hoe, where it pretty much prefers level ground. If I were at an angle and got a blow out on the rear, this thing would tip in a second.
It's also ass end heavy, so steep hills must be backed up or it'll stand on end. All the land here is mountain side, with the exception of roads, and even they're steep as Hell.
It's also a bouncy ride due to its length, and pretty much balloon tires in the rear, so when the front hit s ditch, the front comes up, then the rear hits and like the ripples on a pond, it reverberates for a few revolutions.
But with the air ride seat, it's not that bad unless it's a big bounce, then I bounce 3' up and down and bottoming out.

Of course it's nowhere near dozer weight, it does a real good job at half the tonnage of my D-7 Cat.
The backhoe took some getting used to. I learned on the old stick controls, this one has joystick control, no foot peddles.
I practiced a couple of hours out of sight so I didn't look the fool hitting shit. :bigl
But I still mix them up on occasion, but the hoe is very forgiving, and even has sensors built in, that allows you a steady flat dig without going too deep. You pick the depth and it holds that depth as you draw the bucket in.
Just went and checked my work after the rain, it held beautifully because I back drug my work up the mountain with the loader blade to compress the earth.
I also sold my boat yesterday, so now I suddenly have a huge opening to park this beast. :thumbsup:
Started my own channel with a short clip of me moving a rock that rolled down the mountain after the snow storm.
I'll have a lot more in the future. As simple and innocuous as these types of videos are, they're addictive.
I know, sounds weird, but I've seen hours of guys clearing roads, digging culverts, even wrecking on occasion.
I pray that's not me, but I live in some serious rugged country with cliffs and skinny trails I plan on opening up.

I would contend tho that a bull is made of much more muscle, which weighs more. While the bear, while strong, has a higher percentage of body fat, which weight less than muscle. So maybe it still does technically weigh less, not sure.

The most these bears can weigh is upwards of 600 plus lbs depending on season and stored fat.
I think the Polar bear is only 1000 lbs and much of that is retained in fat.
During spring the brown bear has burned almost all of its body fat, in summer the bear starts storing for winter, and by fall they have an inordinate amount of added weight, as well as muscle mass to pack it around.
Cycles every year.
That little bear video in the middle of the same day is already in trouble, it hasn't any stored energy/fat due to escaping the fires.
Though he's a yearling, he probably won't make it through the coming winter unless man intervenes.
This is my conundrum. Man caused this problem, so I think it is our place to supplement their food, or we've literally killed them ourselves.

It was an accidental feeding. I had a 5 gallon bucket of cheep dog food that I was throwing out for the possums. The bear found it the night before, ripped open and unscrewed the lid, and then left the bucket in the creek. It was a bucket full of wet food that would have turned quickly so we just dumped it. Toy
So the bears in bed, dogs napping on the couch, fires out, a little rain/snow. Life is good.

I love the guy, even for being the bonehead he is.
His name is Lux, pronounced Looxe, German. The Gumby drops his toy, and he always has something in his mouth and this was a crappy frisbee that both had chewed the center out of.
Note how everything, every smell yanks his nose around. Well, he got distracted, dropped the toy and took off after Diesel, then a few hundred feet down the road, it hit him, I have nothing in my mouth and he comes running back, forgot why he was there because his nose once again, betrayed him.
I swear, it's always a "See The Bunny" moment with this nut. Then he remembers the toy, gets so excited he can't hang onto it.

It's a very active area, with the creek on the left and an open road on the right and a heavily traversed trail leading off into the wilderness. Almost everything comes through there, which is why I posted a camera there.
I want to put one across the other side of the creek, but it's a long and rugged hike to change the chip.
I may still do it and leave it for each season, like 3 or 4 months at a time.
Our dog Lux loves the creek. He also seems to enjoy the cold.

In the last few days we've had about 8 inches of rain.
This is normal Ca weather, in the sense that Ca cycles regularly through drought to deluge on average 7 to 10 year cycles.
We're ending the regular drought, so for the next couple of years, it will be wet, then another 5 years dry, rinse and repeat!
It's been awhile but with all this rain not much is moving around. Caught this Tuesday morning below the house.

I used to drive to work in Yuba city across miles and miles of farm land, where it looked like someone had built a road on the ocean, that was normal, and all the ranches built on high ground.
Now the ranches will flood as well. Areas that haven't flooded since the 1800s will probably be seeing historic flooding as well.
I expect this to be global news, further embarrassing Nucelinni and his botched leadership roll.
The flood system was only designed to handle 100 year events, this is probably a 500 year event, where no one alive has a clue just how bad things are about to get.

Yeah, directly below where the rat was dragging his belly on the edge. is a spring fed creek, flowing real well for this time of year.
About a half mile down the road, it dumps into another larger creek that is also solely spring fed.
That's where we run the dogs to twice a day, but the big GSD stays wet and tends to stink. :lol: :lol: :lol:

When you say that is the first this year, where do they winter? I've never seen a lion in the wild. Heard one a long time ago on a camping trip around the Big Bend area, made the hair on my neck stand up. Do you get to hear them often or is that pretty much a mating season only?
We're "only" up to 94, probably won't hit a hundred until around 4 or 5. We're expecting 106 thursday, but who knows. The only idiots bigger than the liberals, ok right below the liberals, are those who predict the weather. they keep telling us we will have a wet fall and winter, and I keep calling them dumbass.

Heard one argue with a bear over a cave, short argument, but that was decades ago, the lion backed the bear down, apparently it was over the lions kill.
But usually they are quiet and hunt primarily at night, and they really don't winter anywhere, they just follow the herd, like deer etc.

I saw a swarm come out in late December back in 1990, the snow was orange, I thought it was dirt but it was fluid in the sun.
It was a swarm of more than what appeared to be millions of lady bugs basking in the sun moving very slowly.

He's late in the year for having been born, so it's obvious mom is pushing him through an obstacle course.
First she drug him up the creek, an extremely hard walk for anyone, then purposely went up the steepest part to the road. She could very easily brought him up the road, but didn't.
He pauses, looks at the bank, that I cut with my dozer which is 5'vertical straight up, that's when he stopped for a moment then headed for the road.
She is doing her best to build his stamina for the winter ahead, which is going to be a real bitch, not seen in 30 years.

We left the front gate open and a bear came over to check out our garbage can. Fortunately we have a bear proof can and it sits inside my trailer I use to haul it back and forth for pick up.
He ended up leaving about 2 minutes later.

We were surprised to get video of a mountain lion. On Saturday (the 23rd) there was a fatal mountain lion attack in our area. We thought for sure it was the one we had been catching on our other cameras.
