I am helping a friend figure out what is wrong with her house she is renting.  The home owner knows something is wrong, but isn't sure.  The mold inspector she just had is incompetent.  Thought I would run it through the CPF filter first.  I had her email me the details...

Any ideas on what it can be?  Her roomates are having issues....

Moved into home August 15 2010. Bella had never had any major colds or
health problems before this time, maybe a injection sight reaction/
mild fever to her immunizations. When we moved into the home
respiratory and ENT symptoms popped up out of no where. I had just put
her into day care and she was a little over 2 yrs old. These are all
potential factors that lead to allergies. The first time she got sick
she ran a fever averaging 103 for 5 days I was told by her
pediatrician assistant that I had to wait out the fever for 5 days
before I could consider it life threatening and take her to ER. She
complained of headaches and would tug at her ear. Her fever got as
high as 105 I took her to Childrens emergency and they diagnosed her
with an ear infection. The Dr. on call could only see that the inside
of her ear was inflamed and was holding fluid. I then scheduled her
with an ENT and her said she had no ear infection but some minor
malformation that was stopping him from seeing all the way thru her
Right canal but nothing to be worried about. I took Bella home and the
complaints of headaches continued. She then started to experience
nasal congestion watery eyes runny nose and raspy cough. SHe was put
on her first round of liquid amoxocillan. I gave her the recommended
doses for 3 days and noticed that it was making her unusually hyper
active. I called the dr. and told them I didnt feel comfortable giving
her antibiotics for what they diagnosed as ear infection/ sinusitis
and it wasnt helping. They recommended that I keep her on for 7 days
if I didnt want to finish the full 10 day cycle. I took her off at 7
and she began to get better. Her demeanor throughout this entire time
can be described as drained, listless, lethargic, not the typical 2
year old energy I am used to with her. She became consistently whinny
and it almost seemed at times that she was ignoring me until I
realized she really couldnt hear what I was saying. At the middle of
October she developed Bronchitis I reluctantly put her on a Z-pack and
that seemed to help. I kept her at my mothers or in my bed room and
her symptoms seemed to go away.I put her back into daycare and at my
mothers while I was at work. That always feel on a MONDAY TUESDAY
WEDNESDAY. Those were the times that she was out of the host the most.
I brought her back to my house and spent the weekend with her and
before I knew it her sinus symptoms, cough, waking up at random
intervals during sleep started again. I moved her into my bedroom one
night last week due to the fact that she shot up out of a dead sleep
screaming at the top of her lungs. I thought it was just a nightmare.
I had her in my bed and began to monitor her breathing during sleep. I
took a handle held recorded and taped it for about 20 minutes. Every
so often she would toss and turn in between her what sounded like 60
year old man snoring and wake up crying struggling for breath. Im not
a dr. but I know what sleep apnea is and I have never seen her like
this during rest. I got on the computer and started researching
backwards starting with the sleep apnea...

Sleep Apnea symptoms
Bronchitis
Sinusitis
Allergies (never had until after the move)

I took her to my mothers last week and almost over night her symptoms
went away. She was bouncing off the walls. Not to mention the speech
disability she seemed to be having when it came to saying words she
never had problems pronouncing before disappeared. I brought her back
to the house 2 days ago healthy as could be. I had her sleep in my
room the first night and took her out of her bed last night cause she
was snoring so bad. An hour after I moved her she never snored the
rest of the night. I put her in my room this afternoon for nap time
and she didnt want to sleep. So I put her back in her and Braylee's
room where she finally fell asleep. I finally went to wake her up 2.5
hours after she passed out. When I got her out of bed she was mumbling
what sounded like a foreign tongue I associated it with sleepiness. We
played in the living room for a while and she started to look very out
there. Her overall color that she was radiating looked to have a
grayish hue. Her eyes looked glassed over and she felt like her body
heat was rising. I took her temp and it was 98.7. I promised to take
her to the store to buy a toy and when we got to the toy aisle she
looked like she hadnt slept in days. She was wheezing dark circles
under her eyes and seemed to have much slower reaction times. I feel
like I am going crazy but I started to feel better after I got over my
bronchitis. My dry cough, and shortness of breath has decreased I
believe because when I sent her to my mothers house I didnt go into
the girls room because I had no need to. 2 days ago I cleaned the
whole house top to bottom. ceilings, walls, bathrooms, ran
dehumidifiers the works. The girls room seemingly gets 0 a/c or heat
going to it and the air feels thick. I started to feel warn out and
run down 24 hours after being in that room cleaning for about an hour.
I do not have nor have I ever been diagnosed with any type of seasonal
allergies in my life. My room mate has lived in the house almost her
whole life and her daughter as well. Angie developed hives when she
moved out at 20 and then she moved back in 4 years later when she had
her daughter. Braylee is 2.5 and has a very hard time seeing any other
color besides purple is always very cranky and aggressive more so than
usual. Bella and I are the only ones who are having strange sever
reactions to some allergen in the house. I believe it is because we
came from a healthier air environment at my mothers house. All of the
people in the house have some strange cough or stuffy nose that
everyone keeps saying is just allergies. I would like to know what
they are allergic to and why the hell my daughter seems to be
developing asthma or COPD all of a sudden.
Black mold was recently discovered in the ceiling of the basement
where my other room mate Janet lives. I informed my landlord I wanted
her permission to have a mold inspector come in to eliminate that as a
possibility to bella's illness. I came home that night to find her and
her boyfriend patching up the 3x3 hole from water damage and mold
exposure. without treating the affected area.

The more I research symptoms the more things I start to remember.
Angie has hives. Braylee has trouble w/ identifying colors. Janet cant
get rid of her cough. Bella and I respiratory issues. Angie's brother
came to visit a month ago and by angie's account has been sick twice
in his life he was here for 3 days. The morning he was leaving he woke
up and felt nauseated for no apparent reason. not to mention that
everyone in house acts like they are on their period 24/7

Yeah!  I told her the same thing, and she moved her out....  I am thinking it is mold too...

Yes, it sounds like mold and a good amount of it.  She should call the city health inspecter and have them come in and do a serious look see.

Mystery solved.  The first inspector who didn't find a lot didn't really look hard.  The second guy came in, and the framework is glued together with mold.

Thanks for the input!!

So who pick-up all the tab for the Doctors and Childrens emergency?

The owners better have insurance.

It sounds like the owner may have known about it.

She doesn't have any money, and I doubt insurance.  She is checking.
